Default upgrade advice 1680x1050

I'm thinking about upgrading my vid card and am looking for advice.

I currently have a gtx260 896meg core 216 card, and I use a 22" monitor that supports max 1680x1050 resolution.

Given my resolution limit (I don't plan on upgrading my monitor) what would be a good card to go with in the sub $200 range? I was thinking about a 1g 6850 (my motherboard supports crossfire, so it could be an option in the future) or a gtx460.

Would I be okay with a 768m gtx460 at my resolution, or spend the extra and get a 1g. If there wouln't be much difference between a 768 and a 1g at my resolution I coudl save myself lots of money ;). I was thinking about the 6850 since my motherboad is amd, and my processor is amd - I might as well complete the "amd fusion". And it looks as if the gtx460 and the 6850 exchange blows in gaming performance at lower resolutions.

Any advice appreciated as always :)

6850 all the way, unless the 460 can be found cheaper.

try to go for the 1gig version if pocket permits.

Are you having issues with certain games? I'd think the GTX260 could still hold up with 1680x1050...

I upgraded one system from a GTX 260 to GTX 460 768MB.
The difference in the FarCry 2 benchmark is 20% increase in FPS looking at the average score.
I don't know what the rest of your system has but I for example swapped out a HD 4870 with the GTX 460.
I was shocked to discover there was a small increase only ... almost the same
That system has a E8500 ... when I installed the same card in a AMD x4 965 system it was 45% faster using the same benchmark at 1680 x 1050.

I oced the E8500 o 3.8 Ghz and the difference now is 25% less than the AMD x4 965 system ...

Hope this helps.

at that res i dont think you'll see much of a differance the gtx 460 does fine even at 1080p so that low should not matter

It looks like the 460 is slightly better than the 6850. Both are about the same price right now.

Not really. I just want to be able to take advantage of tesselation and other eye candy, while also increasing fps. Mainly I'd like to sell the 260 while I can still get some half-decent cash.

@yamawho: I run an amd 965be, so I'd love to see a %45 improvement ;)

So either way, 6850 or gtx460, I'd see an improvement in eye candy and fps over a 260 (I hope)?

At your current res, you'd probably see more benefit from overclocking. But if you're lucky and manage to sell your 260 for a really good price, ($90+) you may as well go for a cheap 460 768mb. ~$50 for a video card upgrade isn't bad.

Hehe the 45% was compared to the E8500 system.

The increase is about 30% using the FarCry2 benchmark...

I Used MSI afterburner to overclock mine up to 810 Mhz on the core and got a blistering 3 FPS increase

Overclocking the video card is overrated ...
