Default Video card Dilemma

Its not often that I myself run into a dilemma for hardware.

However here is the scenerio.

My cousin wants to do a X-fire setup in his Rig, and given bugetary constraints I'm kinda torn.

I can get either 2 XFX 6850 Black Editions, or 2 XFX 5850 BE.
Now you may wonder why on this, and its because with the purchase of the two 5850's I get 80USD back in rebates. Which, he then can use towards a newer Monitor.
So in essence that reduces his costs.

From a performance standpoint, what do you think would be the better option?
Right now gaming is done on 1680X1050.

Best Regards,
ST

If its only at 1680x1050, why not just get a 6950? My general rule of thumb is: Always get the single most powerful card you can that will fit your needs now. Then, if its not enough later, add a second one.
The extra money saved in getting a 6950 will probably help a good deal towards a bigger monitor - you can probably get him a nice 24'' 1080p monitor and the 6950 will still handle it without problems.

I agree with CMetaphor. Get the most powerful single card then when they are half price in a year you can get a second cheap if needed.

Would 2X 5850's not provide superior performace vs a single 6950?
Espically if he then because of rebates upgraded his monitor to something like a 1920X1080?

Maybe slightly but I doubt there is anything you are going to play on 1920X1080 that a 6950 will struggle with. The key benefit is having that room to upgrade in the future without having to buy 2 new cards.

Be careful, sometimes rebates are only one per household, per customer.

And definitely consider single card.

Two 5850s Will outperform a single 6950, but the difference will only be really noticable at high settings or higher resolutions. TBH, at 1080p, 5850s would probably be overkill.

Fair enough, I'll go with that idea and see what happens.
Just wanted some help, not usually stuck in these dilemmas.

Thank you everyone,

I did a some research as i was going to sell my 5850 to get a 6950. But after some thought and everything. I decided to keep my 5850. I only saw about 10-12% difference in performance when benches were performed. Not really a big leap forward. considering the 6950 has 2 gigs ram vs the 5850's 1 gig. and the 5850's are cheaper these days. So, when I get a better monitor. I will probably xfire another 5850. Just my thoughts though.
