Sry to ressurect my own topic here, but there has been some developments...to say the least...

I bought a GTX590, installed it, pretty powerful, but I could see it downclock, getting drops in FPS, rebenching and getting different results...I just RMA'ed it...the whole OCP/driver/VRM thing I don't like in an expensive card like that...

so I'm back to the "drawing board"...2X HD69** cards or 2X 570..

So "subpar drivers" or "weak VRMs"...

While some may be fans on unlocked 6950s id just throw in this word of caution = be careful if you overclock them after unlocking. 6950s have their limitations pushed on them for a reason, so don't unlock and try to push for 1ghz right away because it may cause many problems down the road, lol

To be honest CMet,
I would not consider unlocking. I know a lot would call BS on that, but I don't feel like doing it anyway.
If I feel like picking 6970s, I will...but those HD6950 are pumping impressive scores...
ASUS cards, with their aluminium shrouds are interesting...

The only thing is that there are a lot more user complaints about the 69xx series than the 58xx series atm. So, sure you get much better fps and CF scaling, but some people find the 69xx series more troublesome by far. Up to you man. Still, why not look at SLI 560 TI vs 6950 CF? The 560s are pretty much dream cards to put in SLI if you don't need the extra raw power of the 570/580.

Newegg.ca - GIGABYTE Super Overclock Series GV-N560SO-1GI-950 GeForce GTX 560 Ti (Fermi) 1GB 256-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP Ready SLI Support Video Card

YEAH BABY IN STOCK!

Delevan I bought two MSI 570's for Sli in the new year. They performed great BUT now one is dead and other may have been on its way as well. That means that they died in less than two months . I sent them off for RMA and in the meantime bought a Gigabyte 6950 2GB reference card. It unlocked without issue. My res is 2560X1440 and one 6970 (bc it is flashed as such) can't quite fill my FPS expectations. I borrowed another 6970 and I am now playing with CFX. point is that I have played with both and so far I must say that I am still partial to 570 SLi if indeed the cards would not dynamite themselves. I have already experienced some AMD driver-ish problems and IMHO the min frames are too low for 6970 CFX compared to 570 SLi.

I too am in a conundrum... the way things stand neither graphics solution is satisfactory. I am hoping that MSI read the comments I added to the RMA request and will offer me options that exclude getting another pair of faulty 570's in return

Did you o/c or get factory o/c cards? I sent back one of my two o/c MSI 570s since it wasn't stable and the one I got back seems 100% stable... sadly they had said they would send me back a stock version instead of a OC version and didn't, but at least this one seems to work 100%

I know...those MSI cards have a BIOS with voltage a little on the low side...on top of that, the MSI 570s are reference design, so theyr'e prone to the VRM "melt"...almost every 570s are prone to the same issue....BTW same issue as the new GTX590...cards are dying sometimes at stock...

Have you killed a 570? - Overclock.net - Overclocking.net

The only great 570s are the ASUS DirectCu II triple-slot (they have beefier upgraded VRMs...)....the problem is they are hard to SLI, because of the amount of space they take (3-slot each)
I don't know of other 570s with better phases...

I haven't heard anyone killing their stock reference 570... The only reports I've seen are for people o/c.

Still, if it's true that the ref 570 have cheap vrm components, then it's hard to find many no-ref cards... most will use the ref PCB/VRMs.
