Default Crossfire 4870 vs single 6970

I currently have two HD4870s (512MB GDDR5) running in crossfire. Would getting a single 6970 be a significant upgrade or should I wait for another tier of video cards?

I would definitely believe a single 6970 would be a significant upgrade as it has more of everything, clock speed, shaders, memory, memory clock speed not to mention it also has tessellation and DX11

You've waited one whole generation to upgrade! Congratulations to your willpower!
Now it's time to give in an get rid of the 4870s. Buy the 6970, you wont regret it

It sorta depends if you need it though doesn't it? If your 4870's are playing everything you want with good FPS's then I would honestly stick with them and just wait till there dead or dying, if it ain't broke why fix it? Save some money up for something better :P

get a 6950, and perhaps try your hand with the 6970 bios mod. watch the ram/core speeds.

ps welcome aboard

Deffinitely upgrade! why not keep crossfire going and go with 2 6950s? Also quadrupling your video ram from card to card is always nice lol!

OP I think it important to ask what res you are running. 4870 only has 1GB of ram IIRC and the 6970 a whopping 2GB. The higher the res you game at the more a 6970 will yield increase.

HD4870's in crossfire is still a powerful package, where you'll see the biggest gains from a 6970 will be more VRAM thus better performance at higher resolutions you'll also be able to crank up the AA and AF. Also directX 11 support is significant and I'd expect a 20-40% Frame rate improvement depending on the Game/Resolution etc.. with less power consumed. I currently have a Q6600 with 2XHD4870's as a back-up rig and my main rig has an i7930 with 1XHD6970. I have not done a lot of comparisons at this point other than maybe CODBO which runs better on the HD6970 rig for sure but also runs great on the 2XHD4870'2 at reduced AA (2X vs 8X) and resolution (1280X1024 vs 1650X1080).

HD6970 is a major upgrade. It will overpower your current HD4870 in xfire mode. Also directX 11 & eyefinity is a plus
