Well, we got dual bios on those cards, so you always got a chance to go back to default.
Some stress testing and maybe a somewhat higher fan speed, if the temps are getting too high and you are set.

I see it like unlocking a tripple to quad core. Some work, some won't. A few of them might have been faulty and therefore became 6950, but many are fully functional.

I have my new Sapphire card unlocked with the default GPU and Memory speeds for a 6970 plus 20% Power Control and Manual Fan control set to 45% as the auto never went over 30% and the GPU was hitting 90C in Furmark, currently at 80C in Furmark, no artifacts.

Would the GTX 570 still have been a better buy?

Over a Stock 6950, Maybe, depends on various factors, budget, etc. In most cases, yes it would be the better buy if its in your budget.

A 6950 which can unlock? No, the 6950 unlocked to a 6970 is a vastly greater/better deal, but heres the rub, theres no guarente that the 6950 would unlock.

Here is nothing new, but some light on what's coming up next for the HD69** cards...

REVISED REFERENCE PCB

AMD Revising Radeon HD 6900 Series PCB | techPowerUp

Maybe it's true, or just a scam to make better sales!!!!

quote:

Quote:
The redesigned PCB with its new TI-made driver-MOSFETs (DrMOS) could also present an opportunity for AMD to patch the Radeon HD 6950, making stream processor unlocking using BIOS flash impossible, notes the source. This development surfaced after water-cooling major Swiftech announced that it delayed the launch of its Radeon HD 6900 series full-coverage water block because AMD is revising its PCB design.
So , if it's true (who knows) and if you want an UNLOCKABLE card with volterra PWM, buy before it's too late!!!

I WAS really interested in those cards, until I seen this...even the "reference-revised" PCB will use cheaper components...

Anyway, the difference between a single HD6950 is not there compared to my Hd5870 (at my actual rez.)..

Waiting for HD6990 to make my mind!!!

nice.

funny part is that theres speculation about 6990 being a single gpu unit. id rather have to deal with crossfire 6950 on a single cb than a monstruous ammount of hp on 40nm in one chippie, but the idea is rather cool

Interesting, but is it possible for AMD to go real big and build a chip that "lives up to the hype " of the HD5970's reputation, so basically packing the equivalent powa of the Crossfire HD69** into a SINGLE chip?

Or is that hd6990 is just an incremental change, a little more powerful than a HD6970? That would be crappy as hell IMHO...

some say the 1900 or whatever shader part was supposed to be the 6970, but because of 40nm it didnt happen, i dont really see them doing it, hot and power hungry as fudge lol, but you never know...maybe get 2 out the door, destroy 580 but massively lose in power figures just for a paper launch? :)

i see it doable on 28nm though ;)

If that's the case, I might go back to nVIDIA...
I think my 'ol Q9550 would bottleneck a Crossfire HD69** setup (old architecturel + 8x/8x PCI small loss)...

So a GTX580 or a HD6990 could be better for me... (unless I upgrade my platform this year and keep my HD5870 another year....)

I wonder if and OCed Sandy 2600K or a i7 950 @ 4.0GHz with Corsair H70 could give me a great (read noticeable) upgrade for gaming, compared to my P45/Q9550/4GB platform?

perhaps. but depending on the game played, 5-10 fps at certain resolutions might not make it, or rather, break it :)
