If he opts for SPR (Split Frame Rendering) then the VRAM will be distributed evenly between both screens, thus the workload will be cut in half for each cards available VRAM.

@ the OP,

If you can afford it, GTX580 SLI. HD6970 CFX without aftermarket cooling or single/dual slot spacing between the cards is not worth it. There's almost no room for air to flow, and the fans will crank up to compensate. Depends on how you want to orientate the cards.

+1 to the driver complaints too, watching my friend fight with his HD5870 CFX was funny at first...
