Default downgrading 1950pro for an x800xl on a vista rig

I am building a budget o/c gaming rig and need to know something before I try.

The Vista pc upstairs (one in sig) will just be for light duty stuff and video playback at 1920x1200, VERY mild gaming if at all.

I need to know if it will perform the same with the 800XL as it does with the 1950pro, which is to say perfectly (graphics wise at least).

I want to run at full res, will all the pretty effects enabled (again, non game related stuff here).

If it will impact it at all I will leave it and just game off the x800 (not great, but passable).

I'm no expert on this kind of thing, but I'd say that there would be no problem as long as there is a couple og gb of ram and decent processing power. Only takes a few minutes to try it out..

in my experience so far with this build, NOTHING takes just a couple minites, vista might decide to rape the x800 and blow up my house....

I had an x800xl for a few years... ran NFS carbon, call of duty 2 etc at 1280x1024 at mostly high settings. For movie playback I prefered a typical home DVD player to it though. I think it should handle Vista or gaming decently.. but probably not both.

Well try it. What kind of video playback? DVD? You could just buy a $20-$50 DVD player. But just try it out and If you don't like it you can switch back.

divx, dvd and streaming vid, nothing too taxing, it works fine on the 1280x1024 XP rig downstairs with a p4 2.8ghz, but vista+1920x1200=unsure...

I would not be playing very taxing games on it, that is what the downstairs computer is going to be for...

I will give it a shot, dvd player wont work unless it has hdmi out, then a dvi convertor cable, so a bit more than 50 bux, no tv upstairs, just the PC (thus the 24" monitor).

Fingers crossed...

Just an update for any who care.

The x800XL runs vista on a 1920x1200 24" monitor exactly the same as the 1950pro did. It reduced the "windows experience score" from 5.9 to 4.9 in the 3D section, but the 2D was still 5.9 and I can't tell from looking. Full Aero effects and the flip folder window thingy work fine.

Gaming will suffer, but I don't play many pc games upstair, mainy older RTS's and puzzle games, a lot of which are 2d anyways...

Plus side, the 1950 pro is a great card when run at 1280x1024, so it was a great move. I ran bioshock at full settings on a $600 pc (450 if you dont count reused parts cost), gotta love that.
