Default Crossfire + Physx? Anyone doing this?

I have read a few thread scattered across the net about this, but no good conclusions, nor any recent threads.

I Plan to just ignore the 6xxx and 5xx cards all together and just wait wait to see what the next gen of CPUs,GPUs, and monitors are like before doing any serious upgrades. I was thinking though, about grabbing a cheap 450 to use as a Physx card with my 5870s and also to have as "tester" card since somehow I ended up being my family/neighborhood tech support.

I really don't even play many physx games, but I think that it will get utilized more and more in the future and was just wondering if anyone here is running a crossfire setup with physx, or if it is just a completely stupid idea A 450 can be had for not much over $100 and like I say, it would be nice to have kicking around for testing anyway.

What do you guys think?

as long as you are not scared of using some 'tweaked' drivers? i see no problem there.

I ran it for a bit when i had a 460 with my 5870, however i never really found it was all that useful for gaming as i have/had very few physx games where i could notice a difference. That said it was still a great little test/avenue i went. There is a thread if you search for it where JD and I talk/discuss about doing it.

I did read that thread, but it seems no one ever came to a solid conclusion. I know that physx isn't going to do any black magic, but I like to screw around with these things lol.

Anyways, I had to order some other stuff at NCIX, so I went ahead and pulled the trigger on an EVGA 450. I was thinking about a 460, but the 450 only uses 1 pcie power cable. Not to mention it is on sale for $100(after MIR) and incluedsa copy of HAWX 2.

How can you go wrong? Also, I am just curious to see if it works and how much (if any) difference it makes in physx games. I'll letcha all know in a week or so. If it doesn't work, then I still have a cheap backup / test card and a copy of HAWX 2 :)

I used it briefly (5870+250GTS) and it was fun to toy with, but I had no real purpose. Having an extra card lying around for testing purposes is very handy though, so also being able to use it for the odd physx game would be nice. Go for it.

Well, I gave it a shot and learned a few things so far. Turns out the latest drivers that work with the hybrid mod are 260.63, which just happen to be the very first drivers that recognize a gts450, so I fluked out there. It took me a while to find those drivers, but eventually I got them.

I followed the hybrid mod instructions and they worked just fine. 3d vantage 10 doesn't detect the physx card for some reason, but fluidmark 1.3.1 does (after I deleted physxdevice.dll) Fluidmark 1.3.1 was only released yesterday, but after submitting my score (only 30 submitted so far) I find that with a global score of 884, I rank "3rd" right behind 2(probably just one that submitted twice) 3 x 580 systems. I was ahead of 2x470s and single 580s, though I would like to see a 2x480 system posted. Obviously benchmarks don't always correlate to real world performance, but still interesting in a very geeky sort of way lol. I did try the physx screensaver as well as another test and it worked fine.

Things I learned:
1. The 450 is near silent at idle, but feels surprisingly light and flimsy in hand. Mind you, I am used to 5870s with waterblocks...
2. Quad crossifre.SLI CAN be run in an 800d, despite the fact that it is short 1 rear slot.(on an RIIIE board anyhow) I plugged my 450 in the bottom slot to give it some air and it hangs there just fine, but with no access to the bottom half of the bottom card. I've heard people say that the case needs modified for quadfire/sli with other mobos.
3. H.A.W.X. 2 is disappointing compared to Blazing angels 2 and IL-2 Sturmovik.

Now I just need to win the Steam wishlist contest so I can get some Physx games (Mafia II and Batman AA)
