If I can hold out until the 25th and we get some sales here that would be great. I'm just not sure my card fan will last until then since it gets progressively worse as it runs, but hopefully it can stretch two more days.

ilya - Would I just pull the fan & heatsink off and scrape off the previous paste, remove all screws and metal bits, then bake according to the guide, apply new paste, and fit it back on? If so, I think I can handle that as long as I know how to put all the screws and stuff back :)

Yes, I'm not expecting "real performance" at the $60-range, but until I can save up enough to buy a proper card later, I just need something that will at least play Sims 3 in decent quality since that's my favourite game, and playable quality on my other games like GTA4, Prototype, etc. And something that can handle Photoshop & Illustrator, though I think most cards can do that.

Thanks for the links! Would the Radeon 5450/5550 be similar to the GT 430? I think it is a bit cheaper upfront, but I didn't factor in the MIR yet.

Pull off the fan and heatsink, clean everything off with alcohol, put it on some tinfoil balls and toss it in a preheated oven. Suggested times and temps will vary for different cards, your best bet is to Google around and do some research. After you're done just replace the paste on the GPU.

I would consider a 5450/5550 to be a step down from the 430, and the 430 a step down from your 9600GT. The 5450 may have some issues with Prototype/GTA4, it doesn't meet the minimum requirements for Prototype, but any of those cards should handle Sims well enough. In terms of Photoshop and Illustrator, just turn off GPU acceleration if it's too slow, your CPU is pretty good.

If you can afford the GTS 250 ZLEE linked, it wouldn't be a bad choice either as it's a minor improvement over your 9600GT.

GTS 450 is far your best choice in a near 100$ price range in the new market. In the used you can have 5770 around 100-110 some time which is pretty leet.

What's a good price for a 1GB GTX 460? As long as it's under $200? Does it matter which brand? I suspect not as long as it's not the Gigabyte SE version, right? (I read the review and I decided it's between a reg. 1GB or I'll just spend about $100 for the GTS 450).

I would like to upgrade by end of Dec. guessing prices might go down temporarily after Xmas? Any chance?
