On a chip level there isn't much difference but it is the thermal characteristics that allow one to stand out from another.
.....and that alone (along with a minor bump in performance) is the only reason I would consider swapping 480's for 580's ;)

Silicon consumes less power when cooler, that's all. If you check Sky's review, he deliberately alters the fan speeds so the 480 and 580 are running at the same temperature, but the 580 still has the edge in power consumption. So while the better cooler is a big help, it's not the only reason for the lower power consumption.

So the reason the limiter is there is to limit the power draw?

Well fvck.....I cancelled the 2 x 580 purchase...no problems thier, then see em at Newegg.ca ..huh....the 580 SC is $525 (at the Egg) vs $559 (NCIX).....they wanted $535 for the vanilla Card at NCIX ....

anyhow .....like a friggin HW Junkie...lookin for my "fix".......re-purchased 2 x 580SC and Price Matched em.....I know....I-N-T-E-R-V-E-N-T-I-O-N ....

So, the Dell should be here tomorrow...not sure when the 580SC's will be in....

Once again...look for some 480's on the BST soon .....no comments Dan ;)

Your hockey team is doing amazing. You shouldn't be feeling these urges. You need GPU rehab.

Not necessarily limit in that sense of the word. What it does is basically cap the functionality of certain programs that are made to put an unrealistic load upon the GPU.

I was originally under the impression that high clock speeds and overclocks would run into a ceiling in terms of power consumption but the more I look into it, the more I think that NVIDIA is only limiting certain programs.

Anyone entertaining the 580, be sure to check prices at Newegg.ca (doesn't show up using Pricebot).....significantly lower prices than NCIX (my PriceMatch was approved) ;)

I bought my MSI GTX 580 for $504.99 from ncix, part of their weekly sale. Got three free games too.

My name is Mike, and I'm an addict
