His new CPU will be fine. The GPU is the most important for gaming anyways. That will be a massive leap in performance for a great price!

personally i'd upgrade the cpu to a decent core2duo/quad before i upgraded the video card.

ughhhh.... I must have been out of it what I wrote that.

I agree that a faster CPU will definitely be a help, and the current CPU likely will bottleneck a 6870, but I still think the GPU upgrade will be a notable increase in gaming performance nonetheless (first time I think I have used that word in a sentence). You will gain more through the GPU upgrade than another CPU upgrade. Maybe take others recommendations and go with a 6850...just an idea to reduce bottlenecking and save a few bucks to put towards future upgrades.

That all said I don't think you would be going wrong with the 6870 either...just some food for thought.

I ordered the E6700 a couple days ago. the 2 other pieces I'd like to upgrade is the Video card and Ram.

So I'm going to save up for both. For the video card the XFX HD 6870 and For the Ram go from my 4GB Adata DDR2 800MHz to 4GB G.Skill DDR2 1066MHz.

actually divide and conquer your ram, youll be fine that cpu has a high enough multi for you not to care much about fsb limitations

Is a HD 6850 card any good compared to the HD 5850 it's replacing or the Nvidia GTX 460?

What is with all the news about price reductions with the new video cards coming out? I haven't noticed any discounts or reductions AT ALL. Seems like a lot of propaganda. Bunch of B.S. I looked at newegg and shopbot and the prices appear to be pretty much the same, more or less. Maybe the odd card is on sale but mostly no changes.

it's the new cards that are cheaper, and on par performance wise

You refer to the HD 6850, perhaps? I notice most are $199 so is that good compared to, say, a Nvidia GTX 460 (they're still around $220/$230)?

I thought the Nvidia cards went down so then AMD/ATI did the same but don't see it...
