Excellent review SKYMTL. I'm just finished reading it right now and here's my current thoughts.

  • Pages 1 to 9 are excellent, though I understood maybe only 20% of it! However true nerds and geeks will definitely appreciate that information.
  • WTF IS WITH THE CURRENT NAMING?! Yes I read page 3 but it's still hella confusing to the average consumer.
  • Error on the ending of page 13. The sentence is incomplete.
  • Price for the performance. AMD won again, hands down. Sure there were a few games like Dirt 2 and Lost Planet 2 where NVIDIA came out on top, but I'm sure after a couple driver updates, all that would be changed.
  • Retail pricing. Are the prices going to be inflated like they were with the 5000 series?
All in all, I'm faced with the same problem as impruv. Do I go with NVIDIA for Folding@Home, or ATI for that performance, despite being a casual gamer at 1280X1024 resolution. Expect a thread on this shortly, if HWC doesn't mind.

AMD Radeon HD 6850 and 6870 CrossFire Video Card Review - AMD's 2nd Generation DX11 Video Card - Radeon 6800 - Legit Reviews

^ Has crossfire results in it. Also some overclocking numbers. The results are slightly different over at Legit Reviews where it seems that in many benchmarks, NVIDIA comes out on top. Hmmmmmmm

And if anybody wants to buy, Newegg.ca has 'em!

Newegg.ca - 6850

Newegg.ca - 6870

I call BS on the Legit Reviews review....They're the only site that has the gtx 460 beating the 6850 consistently.

Awesome review! But for an admitted early-adopter like me, this is the sentence that adds icing to todays cake:
Quote:
The HD 6990 will bring untold performance to the table through the use of a pair of Cayman GPU cores and additional features we canít divulge at this time.
Additional features eh? That makes me wish the speculation thread didn't get filled with crap then closed.... I'm hoping they've finally found a true direct interconnect between the GPU cores that will not require the use of dam PLX chips.

Can anyone guess what's on my mind right now? Is it Xmas yet?

"The AA algorithms are calculated more efficiently by leveraging the GPGPU compute abilities of modern Radeon cards and the power of the DirectCompute API."
Meaning morphological AA might be available for 5 series cards as well?

I'm kinda disappointed that theres no necessity to upgrade from a 58 series card just yet, hopefully the later 6 series cards crunch out more performance (Y)
