There is no performance difference between 8x/8x and 16/x16x until you hit 5700 x1200 (tri monitor) resolution. From a review i read recently there is a 5-7% difference at that resolution for dual gtx480 sli.

Unfortunately he asked about Crossfire and not SLI.

Here is a good review that shows performance with a single Radeon 5870:

AMD Radeon HD 5870 PCI-Express Scaling Review - Page 25/26 | techPowerUp

The performance difference with a single card is around 2%...so not too much. When you add in a second card I'm sure the difference is larger since the cards use the PCIe bus to communicate to eachother in addition to the rest of the system.

In real world gaming you probably wouldn't noticed the difference. If your into benchmarking, the difference is huge.

I'm searching for a motherboard and I consider adding an another HD5850 for gaming, so just wanna know whether go for something that supports CF.
And since s775 boards can handle only 8X/8X, I'm confused whether it worth it..

For a 5850 it would be worth it. They scale pretty well in Crossfire and since they aren't bleeding edge they shouldn't have much in the way of bandwidth limitations.

Good luck with the purchase.

Where did you hear that? Mine, being a P45 chipset/s775 board can do 16x/8x with my 5870s. It's a Gigabyte EP45-DS4P.
