My System Specs

Default 4860 over a 5830?

Didn't see much benchmarks/reviews comparing a 4860 and a 5830. I currently have an ATI Radeon HD4860 with 512MB GDDR5, but am itching to move to an XFX ATI Radeon HD5830 with 1GB GDDR5. Just wondering if it's worth the move, since I found the 5830 for only $195 after taxes and rebates and such.

5850's and up are out of the question. Totally not within my budget. So I'm really looking at the 5830 right now.

Just dunno if it's worth the move. I'm thinking yeah, since it's more memory. I can overclock my 4860 to run at core-clock of 850MHz and mem-clock of 1000MHz, but I try not to do that since I'm only running stock cooling.

Your thoughts? Should I make the move? LoL, I already put my 4860 up for sale, just dunno if i'll end-up using my on-board video or will I go buy the 5830.

I wouldn't make it, going from a 4860 to a 5830 is too much of an horizontal change. Going for a 5850 might be worth it, but if I were u I'd try to wait to grab something better than a 5850 considering you already have a 4860, but then again I do not know much of it, is it closer to a 4850 or a 4870 ?

^^^ Closer to a 4870. I was able to play much stuff on max settings with the 4860, but i did see very little lags in frames per second, when I played max on everything in BFBC2.

Stock on the 4860 is core-clock of 700MHz and mem-clock of 750MHz. That's what I have it as usually. Only in very GPU demanding games, I OC it, which is barely.

I dunno. I'm borderline. Really want that 5830, but just dunno if it's worth the $$$.

Not really worth it, unless you need DX11, but who does?

ugh, maybe i should just wait till the 5870s come down in price... not sure if i can wait that long, LoL... that 5830 card is the only 58xx series card i can find that's sub $200 after taxes...

yeah, i guess i'll just sell the 4860 for now, since it's still worth something... just wait till the next series comes out, so that the 5870s come down in price a bit... live off the onboard 4200 for now, sigh...

ATI's next generation of mid-range cards are supposed to come out in a few weeks. I'd wait until then before buying anything in the sub-$200 range.

mid to end of November, eh? Crap, that's like a whole month and a half away, sigh... Arg, the 5830 is really that on-par with the 4860/4870, even with the extra half-gig of ddr5 and faster core/mem clocks?

i want to lie to myself and say no, and that the 5830 will kick the 4860's a$$ all over the place...

There was a rumour that the release was pushed back, and then a day or two later another one said that they decided to keep it in October, so I think it's likely that it could go either way.
