I happen to agree, running one benchmark program is hardly benchmarking it in a real environment. I'm sorry i don't play 3DMark the video game and nor does anyone else. True tests are actually on applications/games that utilize the system. Also, fairly certain 3DMark doesn't use tessellation or DX11 on its DX11 capable cards which add another advantage over the DX10 cards.

Which means f**k all for anyone who actually plays games on their computer. The ATI 2900 series scored better in 3DMark than the nVidia 8800 series. Were they better cards? Certainly not. 3DMark is a useless comparison between GPUs unless you're a benchmark whore.

OP I own three GTX 260s two GTX 470 and one GTX 480. Of the games I play (BF BC2, NFS Shift, Dirt2, Sniper Ghost Warrior, RB6 V2, F1 2010 etc.) only Sniper Ghost Warrior require more then GTX 260 SLI to run at Max at 1920X1200... In many ways I wish I would have kept 260 SLI as my main setup and not bought any Thermi cards... don't get me wrong, GTX4XX cards are fast, just not needed IMO over 260 SLI IMHO. I know there are some tough games like Metro 2033 and for that one needs all the power out there. ATM for most games though GTX260 SLI is great!

PS
I am the guy who PM'd you about the 260's.

^^^ That was my point exactly to the OP....in the last 4 yrs I too have had 8800GTX...8800GTX SLi....260 SLi....280 SLi...280 Tri SLi......and now 480 SLi.....looking back at all my notes I kept running many Benchmarks (and yes, the benchmarks gave a very indication of how the games played), I will stick to the point of my "Vantage Comparison Post"...as in 260 / 280 SLi is about the same performance as a single 480..without DX11 support.....btw my rough notes I kept were also comparing OC'd E8400 vs OC'd I7....there are some Threads I started a couple of yrs ago I believe kicking around...I know they were specifcally compqring single 280 vs SLi 280 vs Tri SLi 280 with Duo Core vs I7.....were some very interesting results...particularly Tri SLi 280 I7 vs Duo Core....

As for the Benchmarks, other than Vantage, FC2 and Crysis WH, many were "in game" utilizing FRAPS.....run for a few minutes and check results....

in benchmarks the i7 machine with same sli setup will probably give way better results, but on other things with eye candy and rez crancked up it wont be that much of a difference :)

I'm not going to try to convince you any more. I've made my point, and now it's up to you to do what you want with your money.
