Default boring, cheap video cards!

Ha, this thread is for discussion of cheaper, video cards...probably boring to most but surely, there are HTPC users out there and those who do casual gaming, maybe WOW or Starcraft 2 or something.

I might want to play Left for Dead or COD4, though. Can I play those with a 1680 x 1050 22" monitor with decent frame rates?

I am looking at 240 GT, GTS 450 and on ATI side, HD 5670 and HD 5750. Should I wait for the HD 6000 cards to come out? Is their release going to mean a discount of the 5000 Evergreen cards?

I thought $120 might be my limit but I'm currently waiting to see if I can boost the budget to $130 or whatever GTS 450 card goes for around that. Ditto HD 5750.

Not sure if I'll fold. It sounds like folding zaps the life out of the card eventually but I guess that is over a long period of time?

I'm also a Linux user so I don't think there's much folding support so not sure I'd be folding all that much afterall. Too bad there's not a folding in Linux movement, though.

Is there any comments on this? I know it's a pretty boring subject, these cheap video cards....

This is just to tide me over until I can get a more powerful card. PSU is Corsair HX520W and cpu is Q6600 so not worried about the other components. I just don't know what is the best deal between the cards I listed. I would like a DDR5 card so I don't really want to buy an older generation card. Also, I thought it would be good to get a lower powered card for efficiency. It's going in an Antec 300 case so a low power, low temps card seems like a good choice for now. I'll have Yate Loon fans in the intake fan ports and the stock Antec Tri-Cool fan in the exhaust of the case so there should be sufficient air flow.

Any comments?

I got my gf a GT240 ddr5 to go along with her i3 530 and I can play SC2 on high without any problems, the card itself was less than 60$ after MIR, uses ridiculous power (doesn't even need a 6 pin connector). Overall I am satisfied with it. I think it fits well for your needs. Maybe a GTS 450 would be better, but for the money its hard to beat the GT 240... You can also go into the used market.

Got a XFX HD5670 for my dad. Along with a stock i5 760, the computer scores 11 000 3Dmarks06...not bad for a card that doesn't have a 6 pin connector!

Slso, that card was selling for $59 after MIR...not too good for linux tho...you'd rather get a nvidia card for linux support.

MSI 5670 here, the most silent of all and like Delavan said, really good performer for the price and power. I play TF2 and WarHammer 40 000 Down of war 2 ( which need more juice than SC2 ) on a 1050 res and no problem found here:)

I haven't seen them that low. :) Maybe $80 with rebate. I looked at the XFX version. Doesn't look too bad. I hear ya about the Nvidia + Linux argument. ATI is claiming better support and there are some Linux users who are ATI fans but not sure I should jump on that chaotic ship yet. :) If I go Nvidia, I'd probably consider a 240 GT DDR5 card but it's a bit outdated?

Do you refer to the MSI Cyclone HD 5760? I can't find any other versions. It's a bit expensive and hard to find. NCIX doesn't carry it so no price matching.

I thought maybe either XFX or Sapphire if one of those series but I'm open to suggestions for sure.

I'm a Linux user so I'm restricting my budget to about $80-ish for a card for now. I know there's going to be a new batch of cards from both ATI and Nvidia but when my system is built, I don't have any good cards to use with it yet. :) So, I thought, go for a cheap card for now. Heck, I could even consider HD 5450 and Geforce 220 but I thought these are only $20 cheaper and server as primarily a HTPC card only. Good logic? I hope so...

Thanks for the suggestions! Oh, btw, I don't like that some of the cards use a VGA output rather than another DVI or Display Port. I don't plan on using it and I'd just use an adapter if I had to. Good argument? Not a big deal but just a thought.

I think these are good cards to narrow it down to. Main problem is finding a good price when I'm ready to buy and choosing a decent card for the price.

There are some significant price drops going on for the HD5770, you may be able to find one for even less than 130$.
From what you've mentioned, the GTS450 is my preferable choice.

Have you looked at GTS250's? You might be able to snag a deal now that retailers are clearing out the last of them
