My System Specs

Default So after making my decision to get the 5870 /Vapor x or Asus ROG Non Platinum

So after making my decision/short list to get the 5870 Vapor x or Asus ROG Non Platinum, Im being swayed by people telling me 2 gtx 460's would be a better investment, or 1 GTX 480 since the pricing is all so close.

Canucks i need some help here

I wanted the Sapphire 5870 Vapor X for its quiet cooling solution with the vapor X tech and low power consumption(i have 2 5750 vapors x's and love em, but sold one) also the aus ROG 2gb non platinum is about the same price PM'd and it looks like a sweet card.

I have $500 ish bucks to burn, but wanna spend it wisely, any input is greatly appreciated. Yes i have read a ton of reviews and they seem to go back and forth between the ATI and Nvidia cards (assuming a little bias since most reviewers get test samples for free)

I like the industrial look of the Vapor X 5870, the ROG is sweet too, but now looking at the more powerful GTX 480 I'm back to square one.

Please this is not a Fanboi-post off argument thread. what say ye?

I get nothing free. I had two 5970s and could NEVER get them running properly on my rig. I went back to Nvidia and plan on staying with them. Far less driver issues etc. At least in my experience.Go with the 480 GTX. That is an amazing card that will stay current for some time.Later,as the price goes down, you could get a second card and REALLY have all games and video options maxed out even at 2560x1600 on a 30 incher. Go Nvidia!

Get one 480 and you won't need two 460s.

If the green teams 485 is less of a thermal reactor then the 480, Id wait and get one of those.

You could wait for a gigabyte GTX470 SuperOverclock (better cooling than regular GTX470) for pretty much the same performance or a little more than the HD5870 depending on the game.

Gigabyte Geforce GTX 470 Super Overclock Review

The regular GTX470s-480s are a little too warm for my taste. You could wait for a GTX485* something!
Or wait for HD6*** series cards tha are supposed to come out soon.

The Vapor-X is nice, but a little expensive. It's a little late to put $500 on a HD5870 IMHO...these cards came out last fall...

The XFX non-reference HD5870 sells for $369 after MIR at NCIX (think the sale ends today). Well, at least it's not close to $500!
The Vapor-X can be pricematched to $450 or around that...

As Slik said, in my opinion you're better off with a GTX480.
From the cards you've mentioned, I would go with the Asus.

ATI's 6000 series is set to launch in less than a month. Hold out.

Smile Video Cards

I would get the 480. While 2 460s beats the 480, 1 card vs sli. I've had the 5970 and the 480, Nvidia's better imho at this point in time, even though the 5970 still tops the charts. Just be certain to have good air flow. An additional fan installed behind the gpu really helps keep it cooler. High air flow with low dbs is what you want to go that route.
