Can the BIOS on a 5870, pulled from a Dell, be flashed?

yes sir. subvendor dash family.
now look at the pcb itself. also save the stock bios and do a comparison with a built by ati one.

keep a pci card, or an nv one in the other pci-e slot handy when you screw it up.

How do I compare BIOS's?

I'll have to find pics for PCB comparison but, that shouldn't be a problem.

I have a spare ATI card but, it's PCI-e as well. Is that a problem?

could be. you want something different. im not saying you will bork it but the chances are there. when you flash do it in dos, and make it such you can do it blindly :)

what i would, though, is tweak the stock one. gives you more chances of it working as long as you don't touch mem timings and stuff like that.
