I say find a 4870 at a good price and go for that. They're around the same price as the GTS 250, but 7-8% better. The GTX 260 seems to be about even with the 4870, but still seems to be more expensive.

If it has to be new, GT240. If it can be used, then go with what others have said, HD4870/90 or GTX260.

However if you're going AMD, maybe get something that supports Hybrid Crossfire? I know the IGP probably doesn't give much benefit, but it could be sufficient for light gaming.

I've used all different brands of video cards, from different manufacturers, to different gpu chipsets. Some of the single slot ones die, whereas none of the dual slot ones die. The owners have nothing to do with it, they use the card for gaming, and that's it.

I use a single slot 8800GT in my backup system which has run superbly for the last 3 years. Runs hot, but as stable as can be.

I would recommend him get a 8800 gt, but, if he looks hard, he could get a cheap 4870, or (if he's lucky) a GTX 260. These cards are 15-30% better and have about the same heat/noise. But if the kids just play Sims, it's a difficult decision. personally, I say he just pay the extra $20-30. He won't regret it in the long run.

If you can wait, might wanna check this out: ASUS ENGTS450 DIRECTCU

Supposed to be 125W TDP, 192 shaders, 128bit 1GB memory with GTX480 clocks, but those are still rumors at this point.

Also supposed to be between the 5750 and 5770 price marks.
