So what exactly is your problem with the ATI cards? Anyway, if you're concerned about heat, switching to GTX 480s isn't going to make anything better. However, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having your CPU running at 80C.

nice from dell to do that. if the new system is well insulated for sound proofing, you shouldnt suffer too much. watch the fan speeds o nthe cards, might want to not let it drop below 50-60 percent during normal use, above 80 pct for heavy duty use..

if he is running sli he wont need to watch the fan speed; they'll be 100% all the time ;D

have fun with the heat and the noise.

did i mention the noise?

I've got 2 x 480 in SLI. they run hot... 96 degrees with the fans full out playing any game i've run. fans are noisy noisy noisy.

I dont like my 480s at all. cost way too much to have them water cooled so i could use them and not go def.

I should mention that the 480 is noisy.

Hot too.
This stuff really is getting old....I've Posted soooo many times I should simply "cut n paste' ;)

My 480 Sli's with my 920 @ 3.83 Ghz....Precision Fan Profiles:

Idle / Desktop / Web / MS Office etc etc = Fan Speed set to 55% = Barely Audible over my Case Fans (quite silent) = Max Temp 39C - 41C

Intense Gaming (Metro, JC2...yada yada yada) = Fan Speed 80% = Certainly Audible, but NOT obnoxious = Max Temp 80 - 83C

Bottomline....(from my experience with these Cards)...if you have to run the Fan at 90% or higher and still get Max Temps higher than 85C (in game), then you simply have to improve the Air Cooling in your Case.
In my System, I added a Xiggy 140mm Intake into my side window to force cool air onto the Cards, the TJ09 also has a front 120mm intake forcing cool air directly into the GPU intakes..

I love my 480's....but you really have to prepare your Case for them....or get WB's ;).......or as Linus said, get rid of em if you hate them that much!

your just not working them hard enough Mr. rjbarker ;D

your right of course, with a proper case and air flow, a single monitor and a bit of good luck, they are only mildly annoying

Smile Video Cards

Each has their own good and bad. When I had a Cosmos with a pair of 5970s in xfire, the 2nd card hit 101 C. I mounted a fan behind them and the temps never got above 86 C after running Prime 95 for over an hour.
Then I switched cases to a HAF X. It comes with a fan shroud that mounts behind the gpus. The 5970 was a bit too big without modding. I installed a single 480 and added a 90 cfm fan. I can put my hand on the card at any time without any heat at all. If you go sli, an extra fan behind the gpus couldn't hurt. Perhaps they can install one for you.

I didn't test with Prime 95, if I remember correctly I had gpu z running as well during the run as I had those 2 cards so close, they were almost touching. That's why I ran the stress tests, to make sure things wouldn't run too hot, as when 1st installed, the cards were really warm. It really made a difference wit h the extra fan. The 480 was so much cooler that I didn't even check the temps. Mind you, a 90 cfm fan is moving a big pile of air. The HAF X fits the bill for high air flow and the fan is only 16 dbs so you can't even hear it.

Edit: I just remembered that we were running the folding program that analyzes your system profile and had to stop it because of the thermals on the gpus.

lol 90 cfm rated at 16 DBs what a great lie from a brand:P maybe at 10 feet of the fan it can be true.
