[UPGRADE]Please, help me with my decision
I bought this setup 3 years ago:
AMD X2 6000+
EVGA 8800 GTS 384 MB
However, few months ago that video card became a toast and I need to get a new one. I know that buying a completely new PC would probably be the best choice, but I'm in no way able to afford a new one these days, so I just want to upgrade.
Sapphire Radeon HD 5870 1GB DDR5 is my pick. 284 € it costs. What do you think?
Here are my questions:
1. Is my old PC still worth upgrading?
2. Isn't my CPU too slow for that new graphic card? (HD 5870)
3. If yes, which other video card would you choose? Or what would you do if you were me?
Thanks in advance!
Edit: I'm of course all for the most effective / efficient solution.
Edit2: My current card is a passively cooled 8600GT 256 MB which I took from my dad's PC
First off, what's your gaming resolution? Your rig will severely bottleneck any GPU that costs over $150, so I advise you to save up. If you need a new GPU now, then get the ATI 5770.
But I want to be able to play new games on high settings.
Crysis, Starcraft 2, etc.
as above or maybe a gtx 460 768mb?
what power supply is i nthere now/after you get video card?
3. I'd get a GTX460 at most, or you could even grab a used GTX 260, 4870, or 5770 and then use what leftover money you have to upgrade to some newer parts. The difference should be enough to upgrade to a decent quad-core AM3 or LGA775 system which would solve your CPU bottlenecking problem.
Unless you plan on doing a big upgrade in the next year or so, I would not look any higher than a 460 or a 5830.
Best bang for your buck with your current cpu, I would look at something in the range of a 5770. A card with DX11 might be nice to have for future games.
A GTX 460 or ATI 5770 should suffice a plenty. Also, another 2 gig of rams might be a good thing as well, not for gaming specifically but for performance in general.
Thanks for advice, guys! You made me reconsider.
So, I'm going to purchase either Nvidia GTX 460 or Radeon HD5830 or HD5770.
Here comes the classis Ati vs. Nvidia dilemma.
The last Ati I used to own was the Radeon 9600 and it gave me a lot of issues. Like for example I remember not being able to play Lock-on and some other games due to freezes, BSODs', etc..
Do Atis' still have these compatibility issues?
I still want to be able to play some even 10 year old games, like Starlancer or I-War 2 because there aren't good space-sims released nowadays.
As for these bottlenecking issues, clearly my CPU would be slowing the HD5870 down big time! But the question is how much? Do you think there would be like...no gap in terms of performance between HD5870 and HD5770?
(I'm a regular Battlefield BC2 player, one of my friends also went for the doublecore + HD5870 combination and he can run it almost maxed out. Do you think I'll be doing just as fine with a weaker video card?)
As for the power supply
current - 400W
For the HD5870 I was going to get a 600W
But 500W should be enough for Nvidia GTX 460, Radeon HD5830 or HD5770, right?
I should also mention that my other devices are 2-3 HDDs and 1x DVD-rom.
