Default QuadFire 5870's vs TriSLi 480's; And everything in between! Crazy Showdown!

Some of you may have already seen this, but I thought it was a good read for those that haven't. The majority winner isn't really a surprise; but it's interesting to see the numbers on some of these setups. I also like that they threw in a 5970 so you can see the comparison of that card vs. the XFire 5870's. I'd say, all-in-all, this stands as a great reference for anyone looking to buy a multicard setup and not knowing where the best bang for their buck lies in reference to the games they play.

System Worthy of a King: Four Radeon HD 5870, Three GeForce GTX 480 and Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD9 Super-Mainboard - X-bit labs

Well I guess jcmaz has the biggest one around then, as he only uses "budget" systems?

Rofl, that's just insane.

Totally USELESS... unless you are doing some crazy multi-monitor with 3d-vision lol

Nice find Caldezar. Interesting read, with insane results. That mobo is something else. First I've seen with more than 2 sata 6gb/sec plugs. Another reason for a 240v setup. Could it be time to consider a 200 amp main panel?

^^^^^ I don't think its necessary...Kruzins "Black Widow" seemed to be fine on a Silverstone ST 1.5 kW with no Breaker Trips...Quad 480's...

I see people saying how it is useless, frankly I don't see how you can say that.

As it is if you look at Metro 2033 you will see that they didn't even have AA on or even tessellation, and yet the minimum framerate was only 33fps with the 3-way SLI. That shows me that if say I had the money to do it, I should put 4 480's in a machine to see if I could max Metro.

Look, I'm just saying that yes if you are trying to game at 1680x1050 it is pointless to have that kind of hardware. But if you happen to have a 30" and like to turn on all the eyecandy then this is needed, not useless.

^^^ Well..to be quite impartial and "unbiased" the Tri Sli / Quad Sli even more so...don't scale worth crap and the additional $525 (Tri) or $1100 (Quad), that is if you already have 2, certainly isn't worth it...as in Metro, the Min / Max FPS are hardly noticeable from a Sli arrangement....the only benefit going to Tri or Quad Sli is slightly faster Benchmarking (Vantage).....as for Metro, 1920 x 1200 Res everythng cranked EXCEPT Depth Of Field yields around 40 - 90 FPS with a 480 Sli set-up.......

Some games actually yield less Frames going from a 480 Sli to Tri Sli (look for improvements with Drivers)
Its certainly unlike the Tri Sli 280 / 285 scaling which saw incredibly good Framerate improvement from Sli......

Bottomline right now..at 1920 x 1200 Res 480 Sli is more than enough "poop".....perhaps the additional 480's would shine more at 30" Native Res...

That is the area I am more talking about, the 2560x1600 resolution. And of course a lot rides on the drivers when you are talking about triple or quad sli setups. Really I would love to see someone with a quad 480 setup to bench Metro 2033 with maxed settings and AA and all of the other bells and whistles. Mainly I would love to know if it would even be playable and how much closer to playable it is over say the standard sli or triple sli.
