In that price range, that's probably your best bet. The available cards that are a clear step up from that card (7900 GS, X1950 Pro) are all past the $200 range.

Yeah, I'm not sure that ANY of Nvidia's low-end 8-series cards posted meaningful improvements over their 7-series counterparts, save for their DirectX 10 support.

get the 7600gt with 256mb of ddr3; it will be considerably faster than 512mb of ddr2. the 7600gt is not fast enough to take advantage of more than 256mb of ram, and the ddr3 will run much faster than ddr2. many manufacturers put 512mb of slower ram on video cards because people like big numbers.

or if you want to spend a little more, ncix has the 2900gt on sale for $150. thats pretty much the best price/perfomance ratio known to man.

Firstly, it's not his money that's being used, he might not want to push his benefactor too hard. Secondly, that card uses a PCI-E slot. He needs a card that uses an AGP slot, which rather limits his options.

Thanks for all the input....I only have a 140 incl tax to play with and has to be AGP.I need to find out pronto what to grab here.

ATI OR E-VGA?

I seen the Radeon HD2400 PRO 512 AGP for 104.99 from NCIX.Plus this has support for DX-10

No. The 2400 series is NOT competitive at all. You might find this link interesting (Start at the bottom, onto page 5). Basically, if you can find a 2600 XT (not the 2600 Pro) within your price range (I can't), that would be a worthwhile step up, but otherwise that 7600 GT is actually at a pretty sweet price point.

NCIX.com - Buy XFX GeForce 7600GT 580MHZ AGP 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI-I HDTV Out Video Card - PVT73AUDE3 In Canada.

Does Dual DVI mean I can't run a CRT off of it or could I just use an adapter.

that'd be the one i was thinking of. then like 5 minutes later i thought of the 2900... by that point i'd forgotten the agp limitation.
wow the price of agp cards is insane.
taking another look, i'd say go with the card from futureshop. its pretty decently priced and you can get it tomorrow.

7600GT is the best possible card to get at your pricepoint. I can play most games with my current 7600GS on medium settings on my 22" LCD so the GT is definitely gonna do it for you for now. (I am still waiting for my 7900GT's to arrive.....)
