What of these setups will have the highest preformance and a better future?

ATI Radeon 5970, 2GB GDDR5 Ram

or

2x HD5850 in CROSSFIRE

if your mobo takes 2 pvi-e videocards, perhaps go that route. or one 5850 now and see if you need more power later? :)

A 5970 is faster. Same clock speed but more shaders. Of course, two 5870s in Crossfire would provide even more performance.

If you think you may go to crossfire in the not too distant future and can/are willing to spend the extra, 2 5870s are better than a 5970. That said, the one card takes up less space and uses less power, if I remember correctly. There is also less heat. I have the 5970 Black from XFX and love it. When you get up that high, a few frames/sec probably won't be noticeable. I don'r recall how the 5850 compares, but there are a few reviews that should list results comparing those various cards as singles and in crossfire. Good luck with your choice and enjoy!

It is a dual 5870 w/ slightly lower clocks. Although the HD5970 can generally pass HD5870 clocks w/ ease.

Correct. The 5970 has less components than a pair of 5870s have, and the GPUs are also clocked lower so they consume less power as well.

The 5970 is a dual 5870 with the GPUs set to the same clock speed as the 5850.
