Default ATI 5470m vs Intel HD graphics

Hi,

I'm wondering if there's a significant difference between Intel HD graphics and the ATI Mobility Radeon 5470 when talking about multimedia capabilities. I'm buying my sister a 16" laptop (more precisely, an Asus K52), she doesn't play games, but she will use the HDMI output to connect to her HDTV. That said, the laptop doesn't come with a blu-ray reader so she won't stream real-time HD video on her TV.

So my question is, knowing that she's going to use it mostly for office/web/multimedia (playing movies over HDMI), is it worth to go with the 5470-equipped model or will it make no difference ?

You 5470 have much more graphic power and will probably give a better display with color andsuch. You can also play some game with the 5470 + some DX 11 capabilities.

Well, from what I read, Intel HD graphics (i.e. the integrated GPU on some 32nm Core i3/i5) is quite respectable when not talking about game performance (which I don't care anyway since it won't be used to play games). I'm more interested on a multimedia standpoint. I'm wondering if, when outputting on a 1920x1080 display, there's going to be a difference between the two GPUs.

For your sister's purposes, the Intel solution is fine. It will play 1080p video without a hitch, which means it can handle anything multimedia related. Buy whichever laptop has better battery life and/or is cheaper. I'm guessing it will be the Intel solution.
