Default thinking about upgrading soon...

So I have an evga 8800 gt right now, which is doing fairly well, but I am going back to school in the fall so I would like to pick up something a little more current since I doubt I will be upgrading for a few years again. I have traditionally gone with nvidia, but I am really thinking about getting sapphire hd 5850 1gb, I have a silverstone st50ef plus 500 w power supply, I will only be running 1 card, no sli or crossfire. Would this card be ok with my psu? I think if I went nvidia 470 gtx I would probably need a bigger one?

Any thoughts on the cards? or alternatives?

thanks

You would be fine with a single 5850.
