Default Overclocking XFX GeForce 7900 GS Extreme Edition

Overclocking XFX GeForce 7900 GS Extreme Edition

Intro

When I bought this graphics card, I didn't have the intention of overclocking it but since I overclocked my CPU and RAM I decided to go ahead and overclock the graphics card.

The Card

Above you can see the nice black and green XFX colour scheme which is beautiful if you are NVIDIA fan as I am.

Stock Specs:
  • 480MHz Core Speed
  • 1400MHz (700MHz DDR) Memory Speed
  • 42°C idle temperature
  • 63°C load temperature
Overclocking

To overclock the 7900 GS Extreme Edition I decided to use ATI Tool v0.26 as I was most familiar with it and it gave me the option to find the max core and memory speeds at the push of a button, where as the new Coolbits 2.0 no longer has that option. (At least from what I saw)

Overclock to XFX GeForce 7900 GT Extreme Edition Speeds
My first goal was to reach XFX GeForce 7900 GT Extreme Edition speeds which are 520MHz Core and 1500MHz (750MHz DDR) Memory. In ATI Tool I pressed the Max Core button and stopped it once I reached 520MHz, then I pressed the Max Memory button and stopped it once it reached 750MHz. I then scan for artifacts and there were none. I checked the temperature and it had not gone above stock.

Overclock to XFX GeForce 7900 GT XXX Speeds
My next goal was to reach XFX GeForce 7900 GT XXX speeds which are 560MHz Core and 1650MHz (825MHz DDR) Memory. Once the temperature had lowered back to down to idle temp of 42°C, I pressed the Max Core button and stopped it once I reached 560MHz, again I scanned for artifacts and there were none, so I processed the same process for the memory and once I reached 825MHz I stopped and scan for artifacts and there were none.

Overclocked Specs:
  • 560MHz Core Speed
  • 1650MHz (825MHz DDR) Memory Speed
  • 44°C Idle Temperature
  • 66°C Load Temperature

Conclusion

I did not get a chance to test the overclock to see if there was a noticeable increase in performance, however when I get a chance to test it, I will test it by running the 3DMark06 and the Stranglehold and Crysis demos and report the outcome.

Overall I am happy that was able to reach 7900 GT XXX speeds with my 7900 GS Extreme Edition. I could have pushed the card further, however I am only using the stock cooling. As for noise it does get loud under load but the nice thing with ATI Tool is I can run the card at stock for everday use and then use the overclocked profile for gaming.

My System Specs

Default looks good

For a super easy card cooling solution have you looked at the ANTEC fancard. When I ran my 7950Gt it dropped the temperatures by at least 10-15oc. It also blows lots of air over the southbridge on the board. Only helps bring down max load temps on the 8800GTX though.
