GTX480 "512" won't/wouldn't compete with a 5970. In all reality a 512SP card would be as fast as the current GTX480 as they wouldn't run it as high clocks as the 480. I'd wait for a possible dual GTX470 card. Or get 2 470's in SLI, or just buy a 5970.

I would probably just go for the GTX 480 now. Another 32 cores will cause more heat, and the clocks will be lower, basically making it ever so slightly faster than a vanilla GTX 480. An overclock though, will do wonders in that situation. If you look at the GTX 470, 32 cores lower than the GTX 480 AND a slower memory interface (320 bit Vs. 384 bit), it still retains much of the GTX 480's performance. The upgrade from a GTX 480 to a 485 will be even lower, seeing as the memory interface will almost definitely stay at 384 bit.

I bet any money that they will release the 512 core version close to the end of the year when manufacturing on the 40nm process is improved, and they label it their new single GPU flagship the GTX 485, just like the GTX 285 took the GTX 280's single GPU flagship status last gen.

Thing is, I don't think many GTX 280 owners flocked out to get the GTX 285. Same deal here most likely.

I didn't even "entertain" thought of selling 3 x 280's for 285's......slightly higher clocks (going from 65nm to 55nm)....hardly worth it at the time....I think your right with 480 vs 480 512 Bit....
