ATI Mobility 5870 To Hot?

Hey,

I recently got my ASUS G73 Laptop and all was fine up until a couple days ago. I noticed the fans revving up louder than usual over the GPU. I installed a copy of MSI afterburner I had lying around and I am alittle worried to say the least.

The GPU idles at ~63c but as soon as I launch a game it skyrockets to 95-100c within minutes of gaming. The games are not demanding either, mainly Global Agenda. These temps seem alittle high especially considering this laptops is days old.

Any ideas?

Also, if this is a hardware issue what are my options with NCIX...I have had the laptop for no more than a couple weeks.

Get a laptop cooler. I use a Zalman and it drops temps a bit. But keep in mind you have a "top" notch video card in a small tight space. Temps will be high for sure as its not like having it in a case with airflow.

dont have experience with that model/mobility video card but it might be a poor contact,little or no thermal pad/paste? :)

Do not use it on your lap or you will never have kids! LOL!!!!!

If you can get away with it and leave no evidence of doing so....go in and reapply with some excellent thermal grease.

I was thinking about going in a removing the stock TIM with some MX2 but I wasnt sure if it would void the warranty.

Also, the laptop does not get hot anywere. I have touched the top and bottom near the GPU and it is cool to the touch. Even the air from the vent is overly hot.

Would I void the warranty if I changed the TIM?

Usually you can't remove the heatsink for the GPU without removing the one for the CPU on laptops. There are anti-tamper stickers on the CPU heatsink that will void your warranty.

You have the dual fan model right? If so something is wrong. I would give Asus a call as that is way too hot according to reviews. This is suppose to be one of the quietest high end laptops out there with the fans barely noticable according to reviews.

Thats why I am concerned. It seems odd that temp are so high.

Well...I decided to try and run furmark and really check out the temps...The GPU ramped up to 106x in less than 2 minutes (I shut down after that).

It seems like the temps don't "level" off...they just keep rising slowly. I am thinking it may be bad contact as someone said before.

I wanna remove the keyboard and just have a look but I can't figure out for the life of me how to remove it.

Do temps really ever level off with furmark? I've been under the assumption that it's really good at heating up a graphics card but not stabilizing temps. Try playing a game and see what happens.
