Default XFX 5870 Variants on Fan and cooler

Hey Everyone,

I've noticed that the XFX 5870 comes in two cooler types. One is the stock type, and another has a fan in the center of the card, much like a Vapor-X
(XFX Radeon HD 5870 HD587XZNFC 850MHZ 1GB GDDR5 2XDVI HDMI Display Port DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card - DirectCanada)

Anyone know if there's a big improvement in cooling and acoustics with these variants? Aware of any benchmarks compared to stock or a Vapor-X. I really like the idea of getting an XFX for the warranty, but I definitely like to keep things cool and quiet.

Thanks

Well,

There is a lot of customer reviews on NEWEGG for these "non-reference" cards.
The major thing is that they aren't made with VOLTERRA VRMs. So basically, unlike the reference models, there is no way to adjust voltage using software.

If you're not planning to overclock, I guess it's not a deal breaker. All in all, a lot of non-reference models come out as a way to cut production costs. Cheaper cooler and components..not always, but often.

some people were stating that it's hard to find waterblocks for these non-reference cards. Again, if you're not planning to water-cool your card (s) no biggie.

Thanks for the reply, I just noticed that the clock speeds on the one with the custom fan are lower as well. Guess I can alway use a reference card with an MK-13 :D

Humm,

Clock speeds? The clocks of the regular "reference card" are 850mhz core and 1200mhz Memory, same for the "non reference". We're comparing both XFX 5870's right?

The Vapor X cards have OCed clocks.

Newegg.com - Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, LED LCD TV, Digital Cameras and more!

Unless NE's numbers are off (which is possible) it lists the non-reference card as 25 MHz slower than the reference design. Not a huge difference. A little odd if it's accurate though

Your looking at a Ref XXX model vs a NON Ref OEM model... NOT apples to apples.

Chromey's right, you pointed at the triple X version (Overclocked version) of the card, not the "vanilla" reference card.

The "vanilla" has the same cooler as the XXX, but with the same clocks as the "centered fan" model.
