Comment and Update Thread for EVGA 8800GT Review

Skymtl how hot do these things get anyway? I'm skeptical about going for a single slot cooler when there is no aftermarket cooler available right now. After spending two years with an x1900 that got up to 80C and a tiny fan that was louder than everything else in my pc I don't want to have to go back to that. If they made something like the HR-03 for these (which I have now) it would be great.

You'll have to clarify, as I am unsure if you plan to power the video card by using an ATX power supply with no other components? The 8800GT (G92) is a fairly power efficient GPU, but to power it alone with an ATX power supply would require the "paper-clip" technique.

The term is used for shorting out the green "PS_ON" pin with a ground pin. This causes the ATX power supply to power on. It's not a recommended way of powering devices, but a quick test to see if the power supply will turn on.

Any opinions on whether a Thermalright V1 would be able to cool this thing?

I have it cooling a 7800GT right now (about 68-70 Celsius after several hours benchmarking at full load, about 42 idle) with an undervolted 80mm fan on it...but I suspect the 8800GT will produce more heat.

Nice to have an affordable alternative if my 8800GTS 320mb should fall short in the future.
Can't wait to see what that new 8800GTS version does when it's OC'd as well.

I can only wish that GPU manufacturers would follow the lead of CPU's and offer better performance AND make the product more energy/heat efficient at the same time. The AMD A64 and the C2D have proven this can be done and I really hate the way these GPU's gobble up the juice.
