My System Specs

Default 5850, 5870 or wait for 470? Cost is a heavy factor

Got my phenom and 4870 sold, x58 set is on it's way.. I gotta decide which card to get so I don't keep my x58 idling and collecting dust in the basement lol. I see a bunch of 5870 oem's and possibly engineering samples for $360-350 respectively. I've seen 5850 engineering samples go for $260~ish a few months ago, I'm not sure if I can find another. Assuming the oem radeon 5850 and 5870 are $260 and $360 respectively, which should I get if I want the best fps per dollar? If I do get the 5850, I can spend the $100 on a second blackie 1tb for raid 0, I need to weigh out the extra power vs. an extra 1tb and double the speed. Then again if I want a 5850 I need to find one first...

The other option would be a 470. I'll have to use a 4650 I've got kicking around until it comes in stock, which is not that big of a deal. I'll assume it'll be priced at $370 after tax and shipping. The only reason I would grab a 470 (now that I'll be able to do bigadv's) is because geforces are known to have higher minimum frames (so the game won't lag up when I blow up red barrels), and I've heard that it is more 'efficient' with tesselation, which I'll be turning on for sure. Could someone confirm this?

Last thing, I don't want to spend 300-400 bucks on a card and see a price slash a week later. The 58xx's have hovered around this price point for 6 months, what are the chances of it dropping soon?

I'll be overclocking for sure, here's my set-up enroute as of now:
tx750
i7 920 3.8ghz (4.0 if I upgrade to a d-14, venemous or TRUE)
giga ud5 sli/cf
6gigs
wd black 1tb (will double up for r0 if I grab the 5850)

I'd say it's a safe bet they'll drop soon with the release of Nvidia's cards.

the 480, and even sometimes the 470, have been outperforming ATI's 5870 in the HWC benchmarks. Not quite sure about their prices though; so if I were you I'd go with the 5870. Unless you're doing heavy data management (ie. a server) a single 1TB Black will be all you need for HDD speed.

If you can grab a 5850 that OC like mad (aren't ASUS the best for extra voltage tweaks???)...and shop for an SSD boot drive instead of a 1TB Black? That RAID0 would be outgunned. You could use your existing 1TB for storage.
Just an idea...

hmm I guess ssd is another option I haven't considered yet :D I haven't been keeping up with ssd's, which one would you guys recommend and how do I use it properly? I heard about an ssdtool thing, I guess I should run that first.. would 32gb be enough? I don't want to spend too much on it :)

The power consumption and heat of the GTX 480/470 killed the cards for me. Got for the 5870, IMHO.

As for SSDs, get the Intel X25-M 80GB G2, very fast, TRIM supported with a firmware upgrade, and Intel has a nice little SSD utility that you can run periodically to maximize the SSD's performance.

I'd probably consider the Intel 40GB SSD pricematched to around $120 (watch for sales!!!).
Look in the "storage" section of this forum. This is where the SSD discussions are taking place.
With an SSD as your boot drive, no more need for a RAID0 for speed IMHO. That would be as little more expensive that a 1TB Black, but you would reap the benefits X 2. You'd use your existing 1TB for all your storage needs. You'd keep only the most important applications on the SSD. Let's say your Windows install and maybe 2 recent games that you play the most. All the other stuff (pictures, videos, other games and applications you rarely use) would go on the 1 TB.

Just food for thought!

really hard to make a decision.. this is like buying a mechanical keyboard, I don't know just how good it is and if it's worth the money unless I can try it out lol. I appreciate everyone's comments, but after half an hour of 'deep thought'() I've decided that I just can't justify that price for quicker seek and program load speeds if I sacrifice nearly a terabyte. It'll be inferior, but the only real situation where I find myself saying "omg i wish my computer would load faster" is when I'm unraring iso's and stuff. In this case, I think a ssd won't help me but 2 blackie 1tb's will help me plenty (besides my first one is nearly full), so I believe getting another black is the right decision thanks again for all the advice

I've found a 5850, and I'll be grabbing the wd black from ncix's sale along with the $10 GC

Currently the 5850 is the best fps per dollar on the market.
