Default PCI-E or AGP in this situation
I picked up a computer today to re-install XP for a client and they asked me to see if there is anything they could do to upgrade the computer for a fairly cheap budget. There is no video card, but a single PCI-E 16 slot (I assume its 1.0) and an AGP slot.

My question is: AGP or PCI-E?

Power supply is a generic 550W and the CPU is a P4 with an aftermarket cooler. Havnt actually booted it to see if its been overclocked but will get on that.

Any idea what card? OversizedRooster has a 3450 on sale for cheap ($30). Remember, it is a generica 550W psu...

Anything that's board powered, unless the PSU has the connectors. Although you could use a molex-PCI-E adapter.

Budget?

Yup, Im aware of the PCI-E to Molex. Should have mentioned that AGP is just molex connectors, you know, to remind people that may have forgotten.

I can get an old ATI 9600 XT (AGP) for damn near free. No use for PCI-E connectors.

Budget will be ~$100. I could get the AGP card, and add an extra gig of ram, or two brand new sticks? (Currently appears to be 1GB of DDR2-???)

Well you can get a new 4650 for about $40, which leaves you some room to buy some ram.

Humm while Intel isnt my gig didnt some of the later p4's run ddr-2?

the pci-e probably runs on pci or something so whatevers cheaper. but not worth puting much into it anyway. gl man
