My System Specs

Question I have a choice to make... a video card?

I have 400$ burning my pocket. My upcoming main rig needs to be updated. Parts are as follows:

Gigabyte GA-P35C-DS3R
Q6600 G0
Mushkin HP2-6400 2x1Gb
OCZ StealthXtreem 600W
NCIx Essentials 120 wc kit

and then the video card. I found those :

http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...9&promoid=1025 for 289$.

Infonec Computers - Computer parts Canada, PC Components, laptop computers, motherboards, processors, CPU’s and much more : Sapphire HD 2900XT 512M GDDR3 2 x DVI + VIVO PCIe for 365$.

Is the 2900XT worth it for the price?

Thanks.

John

I'm not a big fan of the ATI cards as they really haven't proven themselves for gaming yet.

Never said it was for gaming... BTW, I was planning on using a X1650Pro for the rig.

ROFL you'd buy an HD2900XT not for gaming? I'd really be interested to know what you'll be using the card for. A paper weight maybe?

Seriously, the HD2900XT isn't worth IMO. It might shine a little under DX9 but under DX10 games, it basically can't keep up (And by quite a bit) witht he 8800GTX\Ultra. IMO, best single card solution is a 8800GTX for Extreme Gamers and maybe the GTS for a normal gamer.

I wrote I have 400$ burning my pocket... not (mainly) for gaming... so it's 2-0 for the 8800GTS. But when you're talking about the GTS, it's the 640Mb model, right? Where do you find a GTS 640Mb for 400$? GTX is out of my budget.

Thank you. I found this one @ ncix: http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...6&promoid=1025. Same sku as your choice, but cheaper? 379$ - 30$ rebate. It's in the cart, and I'll wait for tonight's special to come. It may be cheaper then.

If you do plan on gaming John then pick this card all the way Bfg Geforce 8800GTX Oc 600MHZ 768MB 1.8GHZ GDDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I Hdtv Out Hdcp DIRECTX10 Video Card - DirectCanada

But gaming at lower resolutions 1280 x 1024 then save your bucks and get this one Bfg Geforce 8800GTS OC2 580MHZ 320MB 1.7GHZ GDDR3 PCI-E Dual DVI-I Hdtv Hdcp DIRECTX10 Video Card - DirectCanada

Just my 2 cents...good luck shopping

What monitor are you using? And the choice of the 2900 XT seems fine to me. Might as well give the underdog a shot.
