Hmmm....I have a 275 GTX fastest card I have....i7, AMD 965, Intel Q6600, AMD 5600, AMD 3800+ 939, AMD 3700+ 939, AMD 3000+ 939, and I think a Pentium D 820 775? All have PCI-E slots. The only game I have own that is current is Farcry 2.

edit:...what am I thinking...5 OS installs, 4 PSU swaps, 3 CPU swaps...yikes. I could do a i7 vs AMD 965 vs AMD 5200 without any problems though.

for conserving time's sake,i wonder if a limited benchmark like 3dmark or furmark would be of any use? :)

Nope, those would be useless.

that would be unrealistic (though perhaps relative). and it really wouldn't save time on a project that would be both nearly pointless and extremely tedious and long.

Gah, I can attest to the amount of work that goes into a HWC hardware review. I thought I'd try my hand at it and I got about 85% done and had to put it away. I just don't have that kind of time to commit on a periodic basis. And to think about what's being proposed in this thread... that is a pretty monstrous project.

I have read some limited CPU scaling tests on specific games like Crysis, SupCom and a few others. It is pretty game specific. Some games seem to really benefit while others as you'd imagine are mostly GPU dependent. Strategy games are often the ones to see the most benefits from better CPUs.

this would take for ever to do start work dangtx this will take months of work. and don't forget then you have to go through all that data. that's why i say thank you to all reviewers for doing what i don't want to do.

Ah what is 80 hours anyways :p...... just kidding.

I can save you some time from personal experiences from friends and myself with vastly different gaming PC's. I can tell you my friend has a Pentium 4 3.0Ghz and a 8800 GTS 320mb card and can play UT3 with good settings but if there are a lot of bots then he gets a bit choppy at times. He also can play medieval total war just fine and same with COH. He used to run a 7600GT with his P4 and then I sold(gave :p) him my old 8800GTS and saw massive improvements in some games and not much in others.

I have another friend who is on a pentium D 3.2ghz or something with a 8800 Ultra that I used to have and he can play every game and most with near max settings.

I would test my GTX 260 on my friends P4 system but his power supply isn't that good and may be dying.

I would assume that the 5850 would have no noticeable difference from a E8400 to a Core i7 980 in 80% of the games.
