i think those designs were roughly the v2 versions used for the 5770. or a variation, i was told that they were a cheaper design and that the reference cooled better. (for 5770's)
Ive had both V1 and V2 5770 coolers and I can say the V2 coolers work better hands down. The V1 cooler is nothing more then a block style copper HS and a small one at that with a noisy blower fan and shroud. The V2 model is a decent size heatpipe zalman flower design with a much quieter 80mm fan.

I don't think I've seen such a universal panning of a graphics card; it's almost as if every reviewer on the face of the Earth is underwhelmed by this product for all the same reasons. That's a real shame because it's put a damper on what was a pretty amazing product launch of the 5xxx-Series, and of a card that quite a few enthusiasts were waiting for.

I was one of them, I actually was going to sell my 5870 and pick up a pair of these for a couple of bucks more with the expectation of laughing at 5970 performance for about 200 less. Only to find out 2 of these might barely scrape by bettering a 5870 at $150 markup.

I'd pick the 5770 or 4890 instead of a 5830. Heck a 5850 is going for $280 at Bewawa right now...
The new drivers, Catalyst 10.3a are supposed to bring some performance improvements compared to the old drivers. Did the 10.3 beta bring some performance improvements?
Great Review. Though I wanted to see what kind of OC's you could've pulled from that XFX and how that might speed it up. It's so bad that TSMC early production came out with dead areas in Stream Processors, but I think it was being severely gimped on the ROP's that causes the performance hit. TSMC produced a lot of sour lemons; I wonder what they've given Nvidia? It's not a bad card and I think at $190-200 it has it place, ATI will announce a price drop once GTX470 start showing at retail and with price, OC'n and the closest NEW competition MSRP set at $350 USD it will look much better.
I had to cut out the overclocking since it usually takes me several hours to find stability which is time I just didn't have with an approaching release date next week...

Approaching release date next week... Wonder what it is.
