Question When will prices drop?

Hey everyone, I've heard lots of rumors that ATI will drop the prices on the HD 5xxx series once Nvidia releases their new stuff later this month. I'm wondering if there is any credence to them. If they do drop the prices, how much can I expect to see an HD 5850 go for in U.S. $$?

Well the prices have been dropping recently, hard to tell when and *if* they hit rock bottom. If I were to have a guess, I would say lowest would be $430CAD? for a 5870, hell that sounds too good to be true.

Well they have been dropping in price a bit lately. It all depends how competitive nvidia want to get to determine ATI's prices. Seeing as they are still more than when they first came out there is still room for prices to drop. No one will know till it happens.

I don't think there has been anything definite confirmed, but most people (myself included) are basing this speculation on logic and on past precedence. If Fermi really does end up performing very well, ATI will most likely have to lower their prices in order to remain price-competitive with nVidia.

One thing that I noticed (and it's obvious) is that a few online computer stores started to put the remaining GTX285's on sale (around the $380 price mark). Again it's obvious, as they don't want to get stuck with 285's when FERMI comes out.

The thing that bothers me is that I really want to buy GTX470 when it comes out, as I'm a nVidia fan.
Most of the info on the 470 leads to the fact that GTX470 will be PRICED and PERFORM in between HD5850 and HD5870. So when FERMI comes out on March 26th (stocks will be low and prices probably $20-40 more due to launch prices), I'll have to opportunity to buy a card that is NOT a breakthrough, that won't look really "shiny" and a "beast" compared to the HD5870. I don't want to go back to team RED because of their drivers, but really, nVidia managed to put themselves in a difficult situation where even long-time "followers" second-guess themselves and look "across the street" peeping at the HD5870.

I'll be on there the 26th (looking at NCIX's sales page/stocks), ready to purchase a new GFX card...who know, I might end up getting a HD5870 (XFX or ASUS) instead of the GTX470!!! Well, if the 470 performs in between 5850 and 5870 and is priced let's say $360 CDN, I'll just buy HD5870...period. I don't wish GTX470 to be priced lower than $350 in price, I want it to be performing tie with the HD5870 for the same price or less(or the "magic" will be non-existant).

Hopefully, nVidia will keep "leaking" some Valid benchmarks needed to make a choice. The wait is brutal.

Knowing nVidia... and I speak from previous experience. They are overpriced as hell, period. I honestly do not expect a "fair" pricing for the new FERMI cards at all, mark my words.

You can always return the card though right? You should be a little more patient and wait how things work out when FERMI hits the shelves.

Nope. Returning it will hit me with a restocking fee and the cost of shipping it back. Not worth it.

I will keep it and grab another one at a lower price. Not a big deal IMHO.
