My System Specs

Default HD5870 Now or Wait

Help me decide...

You guys think the GTX470/480 is going to be a flop, or do you think it'll out perform the HD5870? Ignoring any price concerns, assuming the gain in performance is noticeable. If rumors are true, the GTX470/480 aren't exactly looking too good.

I'll be running 2048x1152 shortly once my 27" Acer gets here (should be this week). I imagine that's going to slow down my HD4890 a fair bit coming from 1680x1050.

And if it matters, I'll be wanting a fullcover block for the card too. As such, I should be able to pull off better overclocks than stock air cooling.

Basically, if you want new hardware now then just get it. There is always something to wait for. Never will you have a time when you have a top of the line product and nothing newer has been announced.

I bought a 5870,so I wouldn't wait. By the time Nvidia's dx11 cards are out and available the weather will be nice and you won't be thinking of gaming. At least that's how I look at it.
I hear they are not shipping in till at least April. 2nd Tier Makers Unlikely To Ship Fermi Cards Until April - [H]ard|Forum
This is a good article also. NVIDIA and its troubled GeForce 400 series

Most sites posting info on fermi right now are just crap so don't trust them unless trusted sites like hardware canucks post something. There have been false rumors since over a year ago about fermi. Sky posted a mini preview and that show the GTX 480 is faster than the 5870 by about 30%. I believe it is going to be a powerful card. It is going to be expensive and you are going to have to wait a bit for a water block but I believe the wait will be well worth it. Plus if you wait ATI should do a price drop.

I don't care what people say there are some good times to buy and some not so good times. If it is less than a month and a new product is coming out you basically are setting yourself up for possible regret so be patient and you will be happier and make a wiser purchase.

I believe Nvidia will retake the performance crown without a doupt.

Here is a link to the mini preview by Sky someone you can trust. NVIDIA’s GeForce GF100 Under the Microscope

I put it straight to the benchmarks but if you want to learn more about fermi than I suggest reading the whole article.

I'm pretty sure it will outperform the 5870. However, it will be priced accordingly.

There won't be another price war.

Nvidia's cards will be priced according to perfomance and development costs.

Get a 5870, and then when you need an upgrade, fingers crossed if prices are lower get a second one.

Wait till GTX470/480 get reviewed then make your choice.
Else you will probably regret if the performance is very good.
If not, then buy the HD5870 which will cost less.

It's just so difficult to wait sometimes!

I guess I should of bought the HD5870 a while ago, now it's too close to GTX470/480 time to really go forth I suppose.

I'll just have to patiently wait it out....

HD4890 will run that resolution without much effort unless you just have to have 16X AA going.

As for waiting, it is foolish to wauit. GTX480 is not gonna flop, but it will be expensive and ATI's prices will just climb due to lack of competition.
