I don't know what to do...

Well I am building a new rig and am almost done...when it comes to video I dont know what to do....

One 8800 GTS 640 MB XFX extreme @ $323 for one and comes with free game LP.

Two 7900 GT's or GTX's 512 MB ea - which cost as much as 1 8800 above @ ~$300+ for 2

Two 7800 GT's or GTX's 256 or 512MB ea @ ~$250 for two

Two 7600 GT's 256MB ea @ ~$200 for 2

Two 7300 GT's 256MB ea @ ~$125 for 2

Those are my choices...I don't know what to do.

I can either get one 8800 GTS now and get a second one next year or I can get 2 7900 's but then I think that I will have to sell them and replace them with 8800's next year but then I think that if I buy a 8800 GTS now I will miss out on buying cheaper 8800 GTX's next year. Which leads me to buying a cheaper sli option now ala the 2x 7800's, 7600's or 7300's now and waiting til next year to see what happens with the 8800's.

I am not a wealthy man and looking performance/Price.

Any and all opinions are valid and welcome. Flaming is not.

Thanks. :canadianwave:

dont go SLI

if i were you buy the best single card solution you can afford.
Have you thought about the 2900pro as well.
If you can get the GTS 640mb at that price thats a great deal.
As for GTX's price dropping- I dont think they will drop by that much before they go and are replaced by 9000GTX or 8900GTX or whatevers comming up next quarter (see thread in forum about this).

Well the thing is that I already bought an SLI Mobo, thatw as before I learned that Sli isn't the same as it used to be with the V2's back in the day...So I kind of want to use it now that I have it...

Well that is what I am counting on as ATi is going to release a new card very soon then Nvidia will be forced to release their new chips as well soon after which is when I am hopeing for a price drop. In addition to that there aren't too many games out there that take advantage of Dx10 yet that's why I was wondering if I should wait...hrm...so you see my dilemma...Yeah it is available @ Tigerdirect.ca for that price after a $50 Mailin rebate...still awesome deal though...

I would buy a cheap X300 or something and wait until the next generation of cards come out. When they come out, you can either buy a used EOL GPU for cheap or you can get a new card.

just get it

Yes I've got an SLI MB too, but just because its a good performer. SLI doesnt seem to be worth the money for the extra performance plus driver issues. You should just get that card while its such a good price. I dont have a crystal ball to speculate on the GTX prices but the 8800GTX will probably dissapear before getting super cheap when a successor appears.

i'd get a 8800GTS 320mb, don't need the extra memory really, only if you do insane resolutions :P

Option #6: Wait a few weeks.

JD October 16, 2007 05:26 PM

Either wait it out for the 8800GT or grab the 8800GTS 320MB. If your budget minded then I doubt you need 640MB. 320MB runs my 22" (1680x1050) just fine on max settings in most games.

Theblackmages October 16, 2007 05:46 PM

well for that price for a 640 thats cheap, you can't even get the 320 for that price... maybe... but yeah, you could also wait for the 8800GT , I've seen benchies and it looks like its better than the Ultra .... but I just call BS there :P

Hrm...some interesting options...

I have an old Radeon 7000 64mb now that I am planning on using until I can decide what to do...but I don't know what kind of games this relic can play, I haven't used it in years. Found it today in my pile of spare parts I have kicking around...

Thanks for all the reply's.
