Default Video Card for $90 CAD?

Hey HWC,

My friend is in the market for a video card. His budget is around $90. He has a Dell Vostro system w/ a E8400 and an upgraded Sparkle 400W PSU.

He plays COD4, L4D, some MMO's, and the newer games that will come out.

I sort of recommended the GT240 but its too expensive @ ~110ish. Or would my 8800GS be a better deal?

So what video card should he get?

Thanks

He could probably find a used 8800GT for that price. It would be better than an 8800GS/9600GSO or a GT 240 (both of which perform about the same). Might even be able to find a 4850, which would be even better.

The best choice would be a 9800GT EE or a ATI 5670 when it drops to the $80 zone.

Or that 8800GS would work but depending on his resolution that 384mem might not be enough.

Or a 8800GT/9800GT given that he has a 6pin connector on that PSU

NCIX.com - Buy XFX Radeon HD 5670 775MHZ 512MB GDDR5 4.0GHZ HDMI DVI Display Port DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card - HD-567X-YNFC In Canada.
NCIX.com - Buy XFX HD-557X-ZNF2 Radeon HD 5570 650MHZ 1GB 1.6GHZ GDDR3 DVI HDMI DP DIRECTX11 PCI-E Video Card - HD-557X-ZNF2 In Canada.

If he doesn't mind buying used, see if he can get a 8800GT or ATI 4850 or 4830. Of course, you'll need a 6 pin PCI-E connector.

If your friend doesn't mind used then he could prob find a 4850 for about $100. if he wants new the 240s have gone on sale pretty often since they came out. I got mine for under $100 taxes included.

How's the GT240 Crazyhorsejohny?

Does it do well in the games that you play?

I think my friend has a 20" monitor.

GT240 is similar in performance to the 8800GS (96 shaders). Imo, stay away from the GT240.

It's currently installed in my wife's rig and she's not a huge gamer but she plays The Sims and a couple other similar games and no problems so far.

Its too bad the 5670 is priced the way it is because it would be a good choice. For a system like your buddy has, going the used route might be the best option.

Shouldn't 4870's used be around that price now? With the new midrange stuff coming out soon, there should be some used cards going for cheap.
