My System Specs

Default Old AGP question

Here goes:

I got an old computer a HP-Compac. It could use an upgrade in the GPU department not for graphic improvement but I need more video output than what the crappy Intel IGP can provide. Checking the specs on the manufacturer website I could see that it can accommodate an AGP graphic card using a voltage of 1.5 volt. Honestly, it's been a while since I purchased anything for a computer that old and I don't remember if a 4x/8x can be used, are the standards retro compatible ? There are some cheap AGP GPU out there that could probably do the job but they are 4x/8x.

I think I found my answer but not 100% sure. 1.5 v Signaling Voltage seems to be for 1x/2x/4x card.

It is somewhat equivalent to the modern day 8500GT.

Got a PCI slot free? Probably easier/cheaper to find a card for that instead.

The 8400GS comes to mind, you might even get CUDA support so with CoreAVC you could playback HD video with ease.

My System Specs

Default Me too.

I'm currently seeking a card for an older box. This box has an ASRock p4i45GV motherboard equipped with a 2.4ghz intel processor so I'm not sure if this applies to you, or not, but here is the one that I'm thinking of:

3D Fuzion 3DFR66256 GeForce 6600 256MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail

Here is a thread that I started on the "Tomshardware" site that gave me some clue of what should be looking for.

Graphics card: PCI or AGP for an older computer with a p4i45GV MOBO`

I hope that is some what helpful. Kir_b

P.S. There are more links to some resources in this post and the following one.

anything will work, i believe normal voltage for agp was 1.4v and 1.5v was used to stabilize an overclock from the motherboard side of things.
for basic needs anything agp that is still sold which isnt much will be fine, i think theres a few things for like 30$ or so.
hell i have a 6600gt that i never had a problem with that i could get rid of for like the price of shipping.
assuming i can find it that is,,, its safe in a box somewhere here.

AGP 4x was 1.5V, 8x was 0.8V, and 1x and 2x were 3.3V. If your motherboard has an AGP 4x slot (you can tell by looking to see if the slot is keyed; if it's completely open then it's 4x, if it has a key then it's either 1/2x or 8x depending on which side it's on) then you can use any AGP card in it. If it's an 8x slot then you can only use a 4x or 8x card, and if it's a 1/2x slot then you can only use a 1/2x or 4x card.
