Question New rig... good enough for 8800gts?

Hi,
This week I'll be buying a new computer. I'm wondering how well an 8800gts would work on it... (especially PSU-wise)

Asus P5L-MX Green 945G motherboard
ThermalTake TR2 550W Power Supply
Pentium4-631 3ghz
2x Kingston 1gb ddr2 667mhz ram
400gb Seagate HDD
XFX GeForce 8800 GTS Extreme - 640mb

Any tips/comments gladly appreciated!

any of that stuff parts you're moving over to a new box? say the motherboard/cpu?

and e21XX series dual core Core 2 can be had for $20 more than that P4 based dual core. And run cooler.

An lga775 motherboard can be had for under $100 too.

Ran out of time to compare them to the price of the board you listed

Definitely DO NOT get a Pentium 4 processor. Even the E2140 will stomp it soundly into the ground. A GTS 640MB card would be wasted in a machine like that since it would be horribly CPU bottlenecked. Get a 320MB GTS and a better CPU and mobo. Also, don't get a 945 chipset, get atleast a 965P chipset board.

Any specific reason why you chose those parts? I mean, that's an old single core P4, with a motherboard that has on-board video, when you want that GTS. Also that GTS could be bottlenecked by the P4 lack of performance.

What's your budget and what are you planning to do with that new rig?

Well, definately no-go with a 8800GTS in that setup.

You need to get a new CPU, motherboard, PSU, probably RAM first.

Default updated...

Thanks for the tips... Well the primary reasons for my choices are budget and what I thought to be "good enough". Although I'm aware that you get what you pay for, some compromises had to be made...
This rig will primarily be used for 3d animation (3ds max) and some gaming (including Oblivion).

I've changed the components to the following... also, what's wrong with 2gigs of ram?

-Intel Core2Duo e6600 2.40ghz
-Asus P5B-VM SE 965G PCI motherboard
-650W Antec True650 Trio PSU
-Kingston HyperX 800mhz no-ecc 2gb RAM
-XFX 8800gts 640mb
-400gb Seagate HDD

Thank you,
Rick

You really need to avoid motherboards with onboard graphics. The chipsets tend to run hotter and if you even plan on overclocking the system then you will not get nearly as much of an OC. Also, for the same price as a E6600, you could get a Xeon 3210 (Quad core) and have a more futureproof machine. A Quad core would also benefit 3D stuff (not games but your other plan).

Where are you shopping? What is your budget? These 2 pieces of info will help us help you the best.

My budget is 1200$ maximum, buying from MicroBytes Montreal Computer Ordinateur (good prices and they've got a store right next door) except for the 8800gts which I'm getting from TigerDirect.ca - Computer Parts, PC Components, Computers & Electronics .

Again DO NOT GET THE 900 PLEASE.

Opt out for the p182 or the Coolermaster CM 690.
