My System Specs

Default 4870 512, dead but not dead

Well, story is, I bought a 4870 512mb card off a person from CL. Thought I got a good deal. Seemed like a nice person. And I hooked up the card, and the damn thing was artifacting like crazy. Did a quick GPUZ and the GPU was running at 56mhz, and the memory was reading as being at 1700mhz?! I was like what the hell. So I powered down, tried restarting and same thing.

Decided to make a bootable flash drive, and get a BIOS off techPowerUp and reflash the card to see if that would fix the prob. Looks like the BIOS had gotten badly corrupted somehow. Have it running 3dmark Vantage and seems ok. Performance mode GPU scores 9498 and a total vantage score of P10395.

Weird thing though, as soon as I touch the clocks in ATI overdrive, card goes wonky again. As long as I don't touch, seems fine.

Hitting it with Furmark now to see how it holds up.

seems like its partially fried imo,
my theory is the guy who previously had it probably oc'd it too much or gave it too much voltage or not enough and it did that and corrupted the bios.
so it may just work at stock settings but could also start doing acting up once it heats up.

since i doubt theres a warranty left take it apart and look at the board, see if theres any visible damage like blown capacitors or anything and redo the thermal compound.

how much did u get it off the guy for? hope it wasnt too bad

if it were me i would message the guy and be like wtf, *(&#%#&*($%$@&% but thats just me.

maybe he managed to give a very strong static shock before he gave it to u

Hey, ya i was pretty upset when I plugged it in and it was artifacting...

Ya I was wondering if it was partially pooched too, I ran 3dmark Vantage a few times without any probs, and 3dmark06. Just installing Crysis now and maybe try some game play for awhile see how it works. I tried running Furmark for an hour as well on extreme burning mode, and the temp didn't go over 90C and it didn't artifact or lock up or anything. I haven't touched the overclocking again. Unless the BIOS I got off the net wasn't totally the right one.
Ya, got it for 120, so ya, hate losing that much. Especially since a new one is maybe 30-40 more...

I think I may do your suggestion with the thermal compound as well. Plus give me a chance to see if it needs any cleaning or anything, dust in the cooler etc. Just wanted a card to crossfire with one I got in my other machine. Then this dammit!

my bet is on the guy tried to flash the BIOS or something and messed it up

Sounds like you made a good recovery though. I wonder if it needs to be baked?

I been messing around with it, since it turned out to be a guinea pig for flashing to get it working again

Seems like I can OC it by flashing the BIOS, it didn't like 815Mhz core, but 800 seemed stable, was playing crysis, and run Furmark. It didn't like any boost on the memory though. Mind you I flashed it with an Asus Bios, so maybe it was off a little for the card.

Ah well, it ain't bad, at least it ain't a paperweight anymore.

Do a good visual inspection, there aren't any signs of overheating or anything. No physical impact damage or anything.

Ya sucks getting a bummed piece of hardware. The guy never did get back to me, bastard. Oh well... I've gotten a lot of good things in the past, and the odd bad thing. The risk of second hand hardware.
