My System Specs

Default Crossfire 4850 vs 4870X2

So before you guys start thinking somebody needs to be linked to lmgtfy, I'll let you know my options:
-4850 512mb single slot ati cooler $80 a pop, 2 available
-4870X2 "2gb" ati stock cooler $210
-HD5770 retail prices

First little question to clear up some confusion in my head, if 2 cards are scaled, does the memory add up (2x512mb=1gb), or is it equal to the memory of one card?

So here are the specs of my (to be) rig:
-Phenom 550 x4 3.6ghz
-m4a79t deluxe
-tx750 or hx650, not sure yet...
-haf 922 (it's not fugly dangtx)
-1080p, maybe adding a 2ndary 17" or 18.5" monitor later

-I play fps games primarily, occasionally bite a flight/driving sim, would like them to be play-able but primary focus on fps.
-30fps is silky smooth to my thin asian eyes, I can tolerate 20fps just fine
-I only use AA and AF if I'm getting frames higher than 30, my eyes can't really notice the difference, but I game on max settings for quality
-I may be getting a 9600gso for physx if it doesn't die. Oh, and for folding too

Which option should I go with? The only thing holding me back from the 4850 is that they're single slot (I wasn't around in the tech world when it was released), is that of any real concern? Do I need 2 of them for my situation? Any reason to get the 4870X2 or 5770 other than tessellation? Thanks.

The 4870x2 by far is a better choice. And no memory sadly doesn't stack so it would be 512mb even if you had a 100 cards in crossfire.

Personally, I don't see any reason in not buying at least a 5 series card for a new build.

4850's - Only 512MB, loud, have to put up with CF
4870X2 - really loud, HOT, have to put up with CF
5770 - not as fast, but quieter, no CF to deal with(unless you add another later on), DX11 ready

Bendover, if only you still had those 4770's I'm actually going the 4870x2 route, my pc looking better>my games looking better I'm gonna try and trade it for 2 physical 4870's, what do you guys think my chances of that are? As in straight trade, 4870x2 for 2x4870?
