No, 512MB per card. SLI duplicates the framebuffer so the total amount of RAM available for use is the same amount as the capacity of the smallest card. In your case, that would be 512MB.

I suggest that you wait for now and "present-proof" your system when you need more power for whatever reason.

Your 8800gt's are more than enough for right now. That being said, you might as well get a DX11 card if you are going to buy a new gpu.

Either a 5800 series ATI card or waiting for GT300 from Nvidia would be the best upgrade.

How "bad" will the 5870 run with my 780i chipset? has anyone experienced using ATI gpu on a nvidia chipset?

No, I'm serious. We Folders quite often use Nvidia GPUs on Intel chipsets, and some have used ATI GPUs on Nvidia chipsets with no issues.

As many others and basically the whole internet says there is no difference running an ATI or Nvidia GPU on a nvidia/ati/amd/intel/via chip set. So I don't even know why you are concerned. Your biggest concern is if you have enough power and since you are running 2 graphics cards right now I guess you have more than enough power. So you have 3 options. Be happy with what you have and don't buy a new GPU unless it is DX11 compatible. The second option is buy a 5850/5870 now. Your 3 option is wait and buy the GTX 360/380.
