2x 260's is roughly $360 before taxes, 5870 is roughly $425 before taxes..roughly a $65 dollar difference.hmmmmmm

pros:i will get the eye candy
cons: more power consump , possibly jump that isn't worth it?

example playing nfs shift? how about crysis series?
does anyone have any idea how the 5870 will react with the nvidia 780i chipset?

5870 = gtx295 = 2x gtx275 > 2 x gtx 260 216core

i think i got that right. but do correct me if i am wrong.

i go single card any day even if paying a few extra bucks

but in my opinion, if your gonna blow $500 or so + nvidia fanboi.

gtx3xx is your best bet.

till next year.....

With how scaling works, it would be more like

5870
Dual GPU's on 1 card does not scale as well as 2 separate GPU's. But the 5870 is a superior option. However, it may be worth waiting for GT300 as the specs on paper look pretty damn good. And it should launch by late November (or at least you will see some reviews showing if it's good or not).

Don't be so sure the 3xx series will be out any time soon. Apparently there have been several delays on Nvidia's end and we may not see these GPUs until sometime early next year.

5870 is way too overpowering for that resolution. A 5850 would do justice. Don't go multi-GPU either. Not worth the time unless you got the money to back it up.

That said, a GTX260-216 or a GTX 275 would be more than enough juice for that screen.

I say go overkill :p. A 5870 is your best bet if you want to upgrade NOW. The 5870 is DX11 capable, something you might want to consider. But the best option is to see what nvidia is going to bring. So if you are absolutely wanting to upgrade now go with the 5870/5850 or wait till nvidia releases its monster.

If he goes 5870, he will be SEVERELY CPU limited. Heck he'll probably be CPU limited with a 5850 as well. Though that's the best card to get right now, unless he doesn't mind waiting for the 5570 or whichever ATI GPU that's a step lower than the 5850.
