Hey there... double post of course.

I just ran the ATI Overdrive utility and it took it's sweet time but it came up with the new clocks.

Default = 725 mhz / 1000 mhz
Overdrive = 765 mhz / 1115 mhz

That's it for me for tonight. While I was testing, I put the stock cooler (Blue single slot) back on my Sapphire 3870. I am going to put it back into my system and stress test it before putting it up on Ebay in order to make sure it is working properly. (Probably will work better than when I bought it because I used good thermal compound and seated the cooler nicely! LOL)

Anyhow, I'd just like to say, I LOVE my card and am eager to build my new system around it!

Oh... and looking forward to SKYMTL's XFX 5850 review too!

Edit: I ran the Fur Benchmark for kicks for a while at 2560x1600 MSAA 8x (nax) and the fan never spun up at all after 20 minutes so take that for what it's worth.

Tomorrow night for the HD 5850 review.

Next week for a BUNCH of others. ;)

I eagerly await the 5850 review, and to know wtf you've been hinting at for the past few weeks.

Morning all,

Despite my post on the bottom of page 2 about the fan noise when you run it on manual, I'd like to say that the fan, even when stressed, does not seem to need to go above 35%, so it's not too bad IMO.

I went to bed last night at 12:30 (ish) and started up the Fur Benchmark Stress Test at the highest settings using the Overdrive OC settings. That ran the card at 100% for about 7 hours. When I got up this morning, the GPU Temp was 86 C and the fan, which was on auto, was running at 33%.

So there is my very very unscientific out of the box test of my Gigabyte 5850. I eagerly await to SKYMTL's review this evening of the XFX card.

Have a good one!

EDIT: Is there any utility that stresses a GPU more than oZone3D Fur Benchmark? Because 100% should theoretically be 100% regardless of the stress test correct?

Not really. And Furmark is as stressful as it gets for GPU stress testing, so you're good.

Make sure you add as much AA and max resolution for Furmark and that is the best you can do.

Well, I was curious to try something simple when I stressed the GPU again and it really did make quite a difference.

I slapped my stock CM690 case panel back on with a 120mm fan installed on the lower portion of the panel. I set it up to draw air into the case over the 5850 and then ran the same stress tests again for about an hour and a half (while I watched Rick Mercer and then The Border - taped it last night).

When I was running them Wednesday night, the stress test brought the fan up to 33% (max) and I had temps of 86 C max with my windowed case panel (no fans).

When I ran the same stress tests just now with the stock panel up and a 120mm fan blowing on the card, I had still a 33% max fan speed, but my temps never went higher than 80 C. The room is the same temp as last time, but increasing the airflow onto the VGA card gave me a 6 C drop. That's not too bad IMO.

Sooooo.... I think I may order some 120mm black wire fan grills, break out my jigsaw and lower the amount of turbulance created by the hexagon stamped grill and increase airflow while I am at it to see if I can get a bit more drop and drop the noise level tool

Cheers!

I'm curious, how important/useful is a side panel fan for a card like this? I don't really plan on overclocking it, considering the fact that I don't think I will really notice any performance gains at this resolution (1360x768 on a HDTV set). I hate the sound of fans, so I'd prefer to not install one, but I can get over the sound if it's actually helpful. I've got a basement suite and right now my card is idling at 31 at 21%... so is a side panel fan worth a 6 degree drop?

Cheers
