Default 4870X2 or 5870?

Right now I am using my Sapphire 4870X2 and am wanting to know if that 5870 will outperform it. (If my 750W PC Power and Cooling Silencer is enough, ill get two 5870s evenyually).

Basically though, 4870x2 vs 5870 on a 22" Display (1680x1050)

PS: Or for the price of a 5870, I could get a second 4870X2.

No kidding. You can run everything maxed for like 2 years probably. No point in wasting money.

I concur. Unless there is a killer app requiring DX11 I wouldn't bother. At least not yet. I just bought a 4890 a couple of months ago and doubt I'll replace it before years end.

5870 cosmetic look is cooler and look more professional jus like 9800gx2, 295 where the cooler covers the card.

4870x2 look plain and not cool.

however 4870x2 is a stronger card and a faster card. pretend 4870x2 is 2,900 points and 5870 is 2,7809 points.

best put is you are downgrading if you going from 4870x2 to 5870.

i mean

4870x2 = 2,900 points

5870 = 2,249 points

Spend that money on a better monitor. It's what you stare at all day.

I see nothing but a huge OMGWTFLMAOBBQMISSILE from this.

Dude if you think looks really matter, I'll have to say that the 4870X2 looks pretty damn sexy, as well as the 5870. And you have it completely mixed up man.

First off, single GPU is better than dual GPU. It's much more reliable compared to having a Crossfired pair. Minimum frame rates really count, especially in games where there is a lot of action going on. Ever see the chart and compare minimum frame rates of the 4870X2 and 5870? The 5870 wins every time pretty much.

Secondly, who cares about points. It may be good for benchmarking, but in reality it's just hype. I care more about frame rates in games more than I do about the points I get on 3DMark or PCMark or whatever. This also comes to the point why Nvidia cards can do better in benchmarking as well. Is there something wrong here? No. It's just the way the cards process the benchmark that shows the difference in points as well as PhysX (which ATI does not have). Another thing to consider is, according to HWC , the PPD a card achieves when folding. However, this is irrelevant to this thread.

To answer the OPs question though. Your 4870X2 is perfectly fine, but I wouldn't hold on to it any farther than Nvidia's release, as we will probably see a drop in prices then. That is if you want to sell it. Keep your 4870X2. It's a great card for gaming!

hohohee, you really gotta stop giving comments like that when even you can't answer your own questions, which we think are almost spam-like. You ask the most irrelevant questions that don't really need an answer. Think before typing. Oh yeah, and where the hell did those numbers even come from? BS if you ask me.

I would say wait. The min FPS may be better but I don't think you could justafy the price unless you could sell your old one and you only loose a small amount of money. Then go for it. I agree with bojangles that a single card is always better than dual cards. But remember that launch prices are MUCH higher than just waiting a month or 2. Also nvidia hasn't released their 300 series nor even spoke of it so that may also drive the price up because ATI currently has the only DX11 card so it gives them an advantage. With that being said I think it is a great card at a great price even for launch price. Although we have no idea what nvidia is doing but I believe it will be faster than the 5870 because the 5870 is not a huge leap over the GTX 285.
