Default Sapphire HD 4890 2GB Vapor-X Review Comment Thread

Ever since it's release, ATI's HD 4890 has been going strong and companies have been quick to add their own custom flavors to the pot. In this review, we take a look at Sapphire's custom HD 4890 that packs a whooping 2GB of GDDR5 and their proprietary Vapor-X cooler along with a hefty price premium over a reference card.

Meh. I was really let down by this card for the fact that the cooling wasn't all that great. I'd love to see the results at 100% fan speed compared to a 100% stock blower. This card does have a lot of potential though. It just never showed it.

Awesome review. I do agree that the 4000 series and 200 series are a little long in the tooth. I can't wait for the new series to come out, even though we won't really need the processing power yet. Keep up the good work!

what's the point of this? DX11 cards are out. I'm only keeping my 4890 until the price wars for DX11 happen.

What's the point? The HD 4890 is going nowhere for AT LEAST 4 months. Do you expect companies will completely stop releasing DX10 cards just because two or three DX11 games are MAY be coming out in 3 months?

In all seriousness though...

How much quieter is the Vapor-X cooling solution than the standard coolers?

I was originally going to go with the 1GB Sapphire Vapor-X (870/4.2GHz) but many people warned me about there after purchase support and various other things...I personally would still have got the card but ended up getting the MSI Cyclone OC as a local store had one at the same price point as NCIX. I Love that card...great cooling and extremely quiet if using 65% or less fan (100% is INSANELY loud though, it's a 100mm fan). I know there was a review done of the SOC 1GHz edition of the cyclone here, SKY what's your take on these MSI offerings? Also are there any other programs I can use to test my overclock besides ATI tool? ATI tool just doesn't work, it freezes and I'v tried multiple versions. Whenever I run the auto tune in CCC it doesn't do anything wether im at stock or overclocked speeds...It works for about 20min and brings me back to factory settings but I can OC to 950Mhz/4.2GHz and play Warhead for hours and no problems...

Agreed, but SkyMtl, would it be safe to extrapolate that the 1Gig ver of the Vapor-X 4890 should preform as well as and as quietly as the 2Gig ver?
