Default GPU for girlfriend

Well guys, I'm not a GPU expert by any means. And in this circumstance my girlfriend would like to get a card that can run all her games, and well, but without dropping $250 on this specific component. We plan to order this part on friday, VIA NCIX (Price match of course). And right now I'm not exactly sure of what to get for her.
It would be preferred if the card is around the $150-$200 price range, with decent performance. I was looking at the GTX 260 as a possibility for her, but considering the motherboard is a 790FX chipset I was thinking something within the ATI realm. Would a 4870 do the trick?
Thanks for the input!

Well, what games does your girlfriend want to play. You might be buying an over priced GPU to do the task for her, also if your a folder get her hooked with a nVidia card.

Oh I'ma folder, you know should know that as you convinced me to grab a GTX 275 for that purpose. And she actually plays some semi-demanding games! She plans to play D3 with me once it's released... so nothing too small. Hence why I was looking into a GTX 260

What kind of "semi-demanding" games, you could potentially go for an even cheaper card then the GTX260 (though it is a rather solid gaming and folding card), just wanting to make sure you don't over spend if the card won't be near being pushed to the limit.

Example: I eventually will be upgrading my girlfriend's GPU (she currently has an x1900 All in wonder) and plays C&C3, L4D, Age of Empires 3, and the replacement/upgraded card i wanted to get for her (in my WTB threads) was either the 9600GSO, 8800GT or 9800GT as the GTX 260 would be over kill for what she needed and well i'm a poor student.

Well I understand I could get her a 9800GT and it would do "the trick" but the issue is that I know for a fact if she sees me playing a game that she finds interesting she'll want to at least try it out on her PC. And well, don't get me wrong, the 9800GT is nice an all, but it won't keep up to a GTX 275 in the slightest... I'm just worried if I get her something like that she'll want to try Crysis all maxed out LOL

If that is the case you'd probably want to find a card fairly close to the GTX275 (or something that is closer to handling the game maybe on dropped down settings) and that GTX 260 maybe do the trick for the price point. I'm lucky, if its a game she's interested but doesn't want to play it, she'll just want me play it for hours (case in point a lot of time with my xbox 360)

Yeah, looks like the GTX 260 will be the culprit in this scenario... not quite a GTX 275, but at least she'll be able to do something other than lag behind in the same game. She likes to max out her settings in everything and than freaks out when her old PC hits 20FPS and she than quits... LOL

Right now it's in the process of being built:
ASUS R.O.G. Crosshair III
AMD Athlon II AM3 X2 (3.0Ghz) -- Will be changing to a Quad at a later date.
4GB (2x2GB) OCZ Dual Channel DDR3-1600 7CLK
500GB Sata2 Drive (WD Caviar)
1TB WD Caviar
DVD-RW Drive

Current games she's playing:
  • The Sims 3
  • World of Warcrack (+Expansions)
  • Combat Arms
  • Operation 7
  • Civilization IV: Beyond The Sword

Upcoming Games (or others she'll most likely play at a later date):
  • Diablo 3
  • Crysis (Possible once she watches me play it...)
  • CS Source (Bleh... this is old... lol)

Resolution: Minimum 1600x1200 (Where supported)
Graphics Settings: Medium-Maximum w/ AA & AF

Do the 260.

Edit: Make sure the power supply can take it.
